Ok, photo-editing gurus...

Suppose I wanted this image:

to open not as a circular image on a white square, but just as the image itself without any background.

How would I go about it? Could I cut the lion out? The OS and lightweight editing tools only crop to squares and rectangles. Could I make the white area transparent so that any desktop or other background would show through that part of the jpg? (I would use it as a desktop pic without its background showing.)

I have Skitch and Pixelmator as my editing tools. I *might* be able to find one of my older copies of Photoshop Elements.

I don't usually think of transparency as being part of JPG. But make a new PNG, paste in the circular selection, and save.

I don't believe you can have true transparency with a JPEG.

Being totally clueless, I'll give that a try later.

Changing it to a .png, that I can do.
