Question about converting a fluorescent bulb to halogen/incandescent
Posted by: PeterB

We have a number of microscopes that use this base/fixture and type bulb:

(BW warning, large images)

Unfortunately, the light the fluorescent bulb puts out isn't bright enough, and the color temperature doesn't help, either.

Is there any cheap/easy way to convert this either to halogen or even incandescent?

I would look into LED. The housing probably will not handle the heat from incendescent. And definitely not Halogen.

LED might be fine, but is there anything that would actually plug into this socket?

We are converting an array of older scopes with LED lighting.

You may need to replace the socket.

But it's worth the effort.

Only part numbers I saw were the ones you see in the photos.

But these do look like they'd fit. The question is whether the voltage/wattage is the same? The link you gave, has (unfortunately) a very high minimum order. I'd definitely want to try one first, before buying in bulk.

No. Lights and sockets are designed as mates or pairs. The bulbs themselves may be of a different shape, but the base will be the same, and mate with the socket.

You either get brighter bulbs with an appropriate temp, replace the socket with one for a lightbulb that suits your needs, or replace the equipment.

I'll look at the bulbs again today and post back if I find something, but it does look like the base on those LED bulbs IS correct for these sockets. It's just a matter of whether or not they're the right wattage, put out enough output, and if the output is a decent color temp.

If anyone could help you, these folks could...

PS, Phone them and let them know what equipment you have, their web site, with 10,000 bulbs can be overwhelming.
