Very freaky CL experience
Posted by: mstudio

OK, I've been around the block more than a few times as they say, not much bothers or phases me. Tonight was strange, however. I put an ad up on CL for one of my cars, within 30 minutes I had about 6 replies. The 5th one offered me full price sight unseen. Whenever I sell anything, I always keep the email responses in order. I told this person there were four ahead of him and that I would let him know if it is still available. I have two appointments set up for tomorrow and one Monday morning if necessary.
Well, we were sitting at the kitchen table winding down from a busy day and all of a sudden there is a loud banging at the back door. The cats scattered and my wife freaked. This person was at the door, when I asked how he found me, he said he Googled my name (great, so glad it's so easy to find anyone). He said, "I have a car full of cash and I want your car". I reminded him that I told him I had other people coming out in the morning, he just said first come, first served. I don't work that way and I told him so. At this point, he still hasn't even seen the car, it was dark out. I told him he could look at the car but I was still going to keep my appointments tomorrow. He said it was too dark to look at it, but he would take it anyway.
He finally left, I pulled the car into the barn, locked the barn and the car and set the alarm. I parked my pickup in the driveway to keep anyone from driving up and I locked the other cars. I also left all of the outside lights on.

Yeah, that is creepy. I don't blame you for taking the precautions you did.

It's probably a good idea not to use your name in ads, nor in responses to initial email inquiries.

I'd bet that you'll see him again tomorrow and Monday, during your appointments.

Probably have it placed a couple grand below street value. Guy probably desperately needs money.

To each his own. I would have taken the cash (full price-no haggling) and been done with it. A bird in the hand....

That's what I was thinking too when I read mstudio's story. First thought was: he needs to leave town NOW. Make sure you're keeping the car title and registration in a safe place !!! eek smiley

Yeah that "is" kinda freaky. He must want to part the car out. Conversation similar to this?

mstudio: So, you got the money?
cl-creep: You got the stuff?
mstudio: Sure I have the stuff. I don't have it with me here right now. I have it close by.
cl-creep: Oh... well I don't have the money either. I have it close by too.
mstudio: Where? In your car?
cl-creep: Uh... no. Not in the car.
mstudio: No?
cl-creep: How bout you? Where do you got your stuff?
mstudio: Not far.
cl-creep: Okay. You want me to come in, and we start over again?
mstudio: Where you from, creep?
cl-creep: What the "eff" difference does that make on where I'm from man?
mstudio: Come on, creep. Take it easy. I'm just asking just so I know who I'm doing business with.
cl-creep: Well, you can know me when you start doing business with me and stop effing around, mstudio!

I never liked him, I never trusted him. For all I know he had me set up and had my friend Haikuman killed. But that's history. I'm here, he's not. You wanna go on with me, you say it. You don't, then you make a move.

That is very creepy. No matter who you deal with, when it comes time to trade cash for title/keys, I'd do it at a bank so they can verify that the cash is real and not counterfeit. I got burned a few months ago and would not want to see the same thing happen to anyone else. If the transaction is done at the bank, they can also notarize a bill of sale for you.

yeah, make sure the cash is real. Also, why was he banging at the back door, that means he trespassed your property. Shouldn't someone ring at the front door if they want to talk to you?

since you had so many replies in 30 minutes, seems like your asking price is way too low. Remember, they want t negotiate even further, so you should ask a little over the fair value on CL

Woah. Continued proof that my use of my Google voice number to connect with CL is the right choice.

Note that Googling your phone number will often 'out' you as well. I did that for a couple of CL listers, and determined that one car was being sold by a recent college grad who liked to post about drunk driving and getting into an accident with the car. The other was being sold by a couple of retirees who liked to post about their grandchildren.

Mstudio,

You should set all your appointments to meet in a bank parking lot, but you meet them inside in the lobby.
Lot's of cameras in there.

If they want to buy, the bank has a notary public and can stamp the title.
You can also have them check all the bills for phonies.

Welcome to 2012.

I know, that is what I usually do with larger sales. The point is that this guy just showed up unannounced at 9pm, in the dark.

why did he want the car so badly? I don't understand someone doing what he did.

My guess it that he was considering stealing the car either by force or fraud.

He might have just thought it was a good/very good deal and didn't want to miss out. I'd have to have observed his demeanor to better gauge my opinion.

Say hello to vision's little friend!

I've been around a few blocks many times. Somebody bangs on the back door at night, they get a face full of Streamlight so they don't see the Sig.

And I would have tried to get the license number and make/model of his car. You report this immediately as very suspicious activity, and they'll at least check the plate. They probably won't give you details, but if it comes back stolen, not on file, or to a different vehicle, they'll tell you.

I hope for your sake you never hear from him again.

Likewise.

I'm guessing that you underpriced significantly. 6 calls in 30 minutes is a pretty clear sign.

mstudio,

Alternative hypothesis with speculation:

This car you're selling wouldn't be one you acquired somewhat recently at, say, a police auction or that might otherwise have come to you second-hand? Is it a unique enough model that someone who long ago may have made some special modifications (e.g. for purposes of smuggling goods) might be able to identify it and get recover said goods even after years of incarceration for their smuggling?

No??? That would make for a much more interesting story - perhaps you'll have to add something to this thread:

My conclusions, in order:

1. Priced too low
2. He wants it to get the hell out of Dodge unnoticed
3. What gabester said about the police auction

I keep switching between 1 and 2.
