should I get a new cable modem?

I have a Motorola SURFboard SB5120 which works well most of the time, except I get occasional delays (5-10 seconds, we discussed this in a previous topic and it seemed to be a Comcast issue). Today I came how and internet was very slow, lots of timeouts. I rebooted the modem and internet has been OK for the past 3 hours. I have seen this before, usually it happens 2-3 times a year.

I wonder if a DOCSIS 3 modem would prevent these occasional issues (both the frequent delays and the 2-3 times a year reboot). Those of you who upgraded to a DOCSIS 3 modem with Comcast, have you seen improvements, higher speed, faster ping, etc?

I doubt its directly related to DOCSIS 3, but it sounds like its time for a new modem.

Next time you get a delay, check the uptime on the modem.

Is that the LED on the modem, or the web-page?

when I was using a buffalo or D-Link router I was able to bypass the router and log in to the cable modem, but I can't figure out how to do that with the Airport Router. I tried several times and I couldn't do it. Now I would have to disconnect the router and hook up the laptop directly to the modem.

This IP address should get you to the Motorola Cable Modem web interface, it works through routers for me.

Question - what does that tell us? In my case (I just checked) it indicates 6 days blah, blah. I do not recall any reboots in about a year. Hmmm…
Ah, OK, checked the logs - More questions: Here are the top few entries:

Jan 01 1970 00:00:12 6-Notice Cable Modem Reboot due to T4 timeout ;CM-MAC=00:00:74:f2:00:8c;CMTS-MAC=00:00:00:00:00:00;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;

Jun 08 2012 07:36:13 3-Critical T05.0 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Loss of Sync;CM-MAC=00:00:74:f2:00:8c;CMTS-MAC=1c:00:0f:02:00:4e;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;
May 24 2012 15:53:23 3-Critical R02.0 No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=00:00:74:f2:00:8c;CMTS-MAC=1c:00:0f:02:2b:00;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;

OK, so the June14 explains the 6 day but 1970 on the top entry? WTF? Seems to go to the 1970 after a reboot.

(Sorry ST - didn't mean to hijack yer thread, but you might have the same type question…

It is the modem and not DOCSIS 3. In any case replace the modem with a SB6120 or SB 6121. That will get you good performance, and DOCSIS 3 AND IPv6 capability. If you are using Lion you have IPv6 already. All that is left is your router.

what does that mean "All that is left is your router". It is an airport Extreme Simultaneous dual band, 2009. Are you saiying this router cannot do IPV6? I bet it can

Your modem gets time from the network. When it reboots, it hasn't connected to the network yet, so the time resets.

If you experience a slowdown or drop, check to see if it rebooted. If it did, replace the modem. Mine would drop every few weeks, then every few days, then every few minutes...

When I replaced mine I bought one from Target (I forget if it was the SB6120 or 6121.) I figured if it didn't solve the issue, at least I could return it. Plus it was within a few bucks of the cheapest I could find online anyway.

No, I am not saying your router cannot do IPv6. I'm saying the problem is narrowed down to your router. I am not saying what the problem is. I don't know what it is.

If it is the AE you describe, download the latest Airport Utility 6.1, which has the fix for configuring IPv6.
