Upgrading iMac RAM—Finally!

Back in this thread,

[forums.macresource.com]

I was debating buying 8 GB to upgrade my late 2009 27" iMac from 4 to 12 GB for $50, or doubling the price to get to 16 GB.

I finally got around to ordering from our hosts.

While most respondents said I probably wouldn't notice the difference between 12 and 16, I decided to follow Fred_Also's sage advice: "You only live once."

And, I thought, I'm likely to be keeping this iMac for some time, so why find myself wishing I'd added the extra 4 GB a year ago?

My uses these days are not heavy, but I am running Windoze on a Parallels VM, and that sometimes requires a fair amount of RAM.

Of course, failure to seize the moment is costly: the price went up $10 since this thread two months ago. bomb smiley

Is upgrading the RAM easy? I cannot do those tiny teeny screws like on the old airport cards. My eyes and fingers will not do that anymore.

I went from 4 to 12 right away, but see the need to go to 24 =)

I'm at 16 GB and feel pretty content on both my iMac and my Mini Server. 4-4's in the iMac and 2 8's in the Mini. The 3 Phillips are tiny but are captured, so you shouldn't have much trouble.

The RAM access panel is right at the bottom of the iMac. The two screws are small, but not teeny-tiny, and they are Philips not something weird. Lay the iMac down and the panel is easily accessible.

Don't try to get at anything else inside, though. You have to take off and replace the glass and display—not for the faint of heart.

Lets not confuse samintx -- there's no glass or display removal for ram access on any iMac ever made. Going all the way back to the original G3 Bondi blue iMac.

My 7 year old daughter could replace/add RAM to my 27 iMac

Let's not underestimate samintx. I said "anything else inside." I expect your 7-year-old could understand that, too.
