One TV station showed the entrance. Very small opening. About 6 inches of rain so I'm sure he was moving fast.

DULUTH, Minn. - An 8-year-old boy is OK after being swept about six blocks through a culvert in flooded Duluth.

St. Louis County Undersheriff Dave Phillips says the boy suffered some cuts, scrapes and bruises but is fine.

Phillips says the boy somehow was swept into the culvert near Proctor Wednesday afternoon and traveled about six blocks before he "popped up" down current.

The undersheriff calls it a "miracle out of this whole disaster." He did not know the boy's name.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

Correction?

"LaLonde said he believes that the storm sewer pipe is 24 inches in diameter. Officials estimated that the boy hit 20 miles per hour as he shot through the pipe, according to a local news report."

Gawd.. that is a lucky kid.

We had a memorable culvert behind my house... that connected a stream to a lake. When we had summer thunderstorms we'd get flash floods down the stream, and the debris would partially block the culvert. Then the water would back up, and there would be this amazing whirlpool at the end of the resultant mini-lake.

It was a cool place to go and sail little 'boats' made of twigs and leaves. One day I reached too far out to try to rescue a boat (with bug sailors), and fell in. Damn culvert had me by the legs for a good half hour until the water level went down enough. I think I was 8 ?

I dragged myself out, went up the hill to the house, took a shower, cleaned up and bandaged my scrapes, and never, ever, ever told Mom. I also never tried that trick again.

And how did this NOT qualify as one of your 3 crazy things? Nevermind... I see you're one crazy guy with lots of good stories... Which inspires me - should we have a sticky thread called "storytelling"? Maybe Storytelling Sunday, and have it be the first or last Sunday of every month to go with the Free Forum Mondays?
