For those that still can't get enough of the SX40... (possible BW)

DP's SX40 zoom thread below made me do it...

Was fooling around last weekend at Baby Buzz's scout ball baseball games, and one of his buddies from his high school team plays for the other scout ball team. So, just for the heck of it, while I was sitting my folding chair, all the way behind the stands at the stadium, I got well into the digital zoom portion of the SX40's telephoto capabilities, to see how up close and personal I could get w/ Baby Buzz's buddy during warm ups in the outfield. Here's the result on a cloudy Saturday morning near the beach...
A bit grainy, but Baby Buzz immediately recognized his schoolmate, and wondered how I got the picture that close up from where I was sitting. Digital zoom.

The following day (Father's Day) the rematch was at the other team's hot & sunny field in the valley, and here's a screen shot from a video clip when Baby Buzz hit the ball so hard, the other team's manager is already signally, on the right, for another pitcher while Baby Buzz is fist bumping his coach after knocking in a couple of runs.

A few seconds later, back in the SX40's photo mode, Baby Buzz realized what happened, and was smiling at his teammates while the other team swapped pitchers.

Since it was hot & sunny, Baby Buzz then doffed hit helmet while the new pitcher warmed up.

On Sunday, I was shooting from ground level, right up against the cyclone fence in my folding chair, hiding from the sun under a couple of umbrellas, so was much closer to the action. Was not in aggressive, all out photo mode either day, mostly just videoing the kid's at bats, and snapping a few random pics. The SX40 is great at what is does w/ all of its flexibility. Unfortunately, after Baby Buzz put his team ahead, the other team came back and won the game.

For the record, "Baby" Buzz isn't so much of a "baby" any more!

(But I suppose as a father, they are always our "babies."winking smiley

is it just me or somehow the bokeh on this lens is kinda of strange? almost seems like a double image. Now the nice smooth out of focus I want to see.

Don't get me wrong, I am this close to getting an SX40. I am leaving for Europe in 2 weeks and I wonder if I should carry my 8 year old *istD with 4 lenses (longest one is 105, or 157mm equivalent) or if I should just get a SX40 and leave the dSLR at home

s-t, kid was shot at 1/1000... would/could have softened the bokeh by shooting kid standing around at 1/500 or 1/320, but just flipped to settings I was using for more action oriented shooting. Baby Buzz was about 1/3 of the way between me and the background fence/foliage, see still from video clip for reference. As noted, I was basically just playing around, flipping and clicking, while hiding in my folding chair, not really close to being in full-on photograher mode.

TUD- I've been trying to think of a more grown up handle for him... at 6' 3", 200# (down from about 215#, btw) he's bigger than the average baby, though at some of his athletic adventures, I've been accused of being his grandfather rather than his father... old fogey smiley

NOS- the kid is more than capable of handling his own stick at this point :-)
he's a fair bit bigger than when you saw him at the SoCal MRF lunch a few years ago, eh?

Nice, usable shots and he's a good looking kid. I can see using the digital zoom for some things.

Thanks! Made my day :-)... the kid will get a kick out of that when he gets back from the gym... and it'll probably make Mrs. Buzz cry when she get back from her trip to Hotlanta.

You got a handsome young man! The camera is awesome.
