Installing towel hooks on the doors because the heavy gravity zone in the bathroom magically pulls the towels out of the kids hands and on to the floor. So, towel hooks it is.

Dirty kids is not an option, as much as they would like that. So, I used these to anchor the hooks:


After installing, they are flimsy and feel like they are barely holding on. The doors are about 1/4" thick panels, hollow core.

Any recommendation on a better anchor type for this use?

Change to a toggle bolt/molly anchor.

A description of type of hook would be helpful. OWC Jamie has a the best solution for the hook type that you mount a plate then the hook part mount to that with a tiny screw at the bottom.

It's mounted by 2 exposed screws. This isn't the style, but you get the idea for type of mount.

Avoid all anchor hooks in hollow core doors. They are too flimsy . I put a strip of oak baseboard moulding across the door, screwed into the rails at the edges. Then hang hooks onto the board. Works perfectly.

But if you're going to make a go of it anyway, use the toggle bolts that Jamie recommended with the addition of large flat washers to give each molly some surface area to anchor against.

It won't take much weight at all for that door panel to delaminate from the core of the door. cbelt3 is right. His solution also sounds ok, but I wouldn't hang anything heavier than a couple towels on there, even at that. Strange weight being added to the door could still cause it to go out of square and potentially still delaminate.

I think I'd go with billb's suggestion, or nothing (or replace the door with a solid one).

I really miss my last house with the solid oak doors. These hollow cores are the worst.

Forget the anchors. Given the type mounting cbelt3 is correct. Now run out to the shop and grab a 1x3 of hardwood and sand,stain, and spray finish..The actual wood in the door is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches on the sides. They add a block for the handle area.
Maybe there is a over the counter unit for your door size on the web. Maybe for this application or a closet.

Is there any chance that you might have forgotten to push the little red pin in after inserting the toggler? I ask because once in a while I catch myself doing that. Also, I used them on my hollow-core door and they are tight and solid so far. Your panel thickness might also be an issue; mine is only about an eighth of an inch so I used the smallest togglers.

Most of the hollow core door faces are so thin, some anchors will never tighten properly.

Many of those bolt toggles have screws so long they will go through both faces of the door. Measure before you buy.

I'd go with the 3M hooks, as well. Clean the door well, let it dry, mount the hooks, and let them "cure" overnight before using them.
