What is the difference?

Drove a distance to see a doctor for a mild tooth ache. She prescribed Ibuprofen 400MG. I could have taken 2 pills of 200MG each of an OTC. My question is why the former is a prescription?

Because 400mg of the OTC is an overdose based on the OTC regs. (Safe too. I've taken 800 at a time)

There is no difference. It's just that high dosages can be hazardous so the regulation doesn't allow production of high dose OTC pills because most people shouldn't be taking them. It's mildly odd that the smallest single prescription pills = the maximum recommended OTC dose (400 mg), but that's nothing to get excited about.

Warning: I am not a doctor nor pharmacist, nor do I play one on TV.

BTW, don't take those on an empty stomach or immediately before going to sleep, or you'll be sorry.

1) why not see a DENTIST?

2) did she identify the CAUSE of the tooth ache? just taking pills to calm down the pain is like painting a rusty car. You still have rust under the new paint, and sooner (rather than later) it will surface.

I got a cracked molar. It's not an emergency so said the doctor. I do have an appointment for a dentist this Thursday.

A few years back while in Mexico for the Rosarita-to-Ensenada bike ride I needed to purchase ibuprofen. The only pills available OTC down there were 800mg each.

when my son had an abscessed tooth earlier this year the dentist had him taking 4 X 200mg ibuprofen every six hours along with other more potent pain meds. this went on for a number of days.

As everybody said, the only difference is the size of the pill (in mg).

I was told by a PA that I didn't have to get a prescription of 800mg ibuprofen, as I has a Costco 55gal drum of 200mg tablets.

She told me to take four at a time, and times and intervals.
