iPhoto Update Adds AVCHD Support!

Perhaps this is not news to many, and perhaps not a big deal to many, either, but for me, this is a really important issue!

I have a Panasonic DMZ-TS7 digital camera. By default it shoots video in AVCHD format (it can also shoot in "Motion JPEG," but in my tests, the quality of that format wasn't as good).

I didn't realize when I bought the camera that iPhoto wouldn't be able to import its videos (more specifically, I didn't realize when I bought the camera that its videos were stored in a format different than what my Canon G3 had used--my mistake for not researching it better). So ever since I bought the camera, I've been copying the movies to a folder on my desktop, and planning to eventually use one of several "hacks" to allow iPhoto to import them (there are several--in many cases, multi-step--processes that allow you to either change the format of the video, or fool iPhoto into thinking they are in one of its acceptable formats).

I just saw in Software Update on my iMac that there is an update available for iPhoto, and I noticed it was a huge update (640 MB), so I looked at it's specifics, and saw that it adds AVCHD support to iPhoto.

I haven't actually installed the update, so I can't actually confirm that it works, but I thought this might be important enough to others that it was worth a quick post to the forum.

:-)

Crossing my fingers that it now allows me to import my large backlog of AVCHD videos!

still no AVCHD in iMovie, though, correct? (last time I looked there was not.)

I've been saving my AVCHD films just as files and opening them with VLC for a couple of years, but I wish I could easily edit them on my Mac.

In that case it would seem an iMovie/iLife refresh should come later this year, no?

Wow, they add AVCHD support to iPhoto but not iMovie?

That format has been around for what, five or six years? That makes Apple's updates to the Mac Pro seem timely.
