Mac owners like paying more...

"Orbitz Worldwide Inc has found that people who use Apple Inc's Mac computers spend as much as 30 percent more per night on hotels, so the online travel agency is starting to show them different, and sometimes costlier, travel options than Windows visitors see"

and in fairness, Orbitz pointed out that users can opt to rank results by price.

Data mining is the same as racial profiling IMHO.

I saw this on the news last night and wondered how soon it would appear on the forum.

For me, this illustrates how the "insidious" information gathering is being used to manipulate the public.

As more and more statistical information is analysed, those who wish to use the results will have greater and greater ability to manipulate the public.

No doubt, an already scary situation can become much, much scarier, especially with money playing such a huge role in deciding elections. Shame on the Supreme Court!

At least, we belong to an "elite" slice of computer users. drinking smiley

Oh well, as "someone" has said, the solution is "hookers and booze!"

...but, of course, as Mac users, we'll all pay more for that. oh snap smiley

I for one welcome a higher quality level of hookers and booze. The STD's are easier to treat, and the hangovers are less traumatic. big grin smiley

Back in the day (1950's) my dad insisted on parking the car out of sight of the motel when we were vacationing. His opinion was that seeing us drive up in a 1951 Buick Roadmaster would jack up the room price.

Counterpoint: On our honeymoon in 1965, spring break time in FL my wife and I were refused a room several times (Sorry - no vacancy) I was wearing a tee shirt and shorts. The light dawned and I drove the 61 Cadillac Eldorado ragtop I was driving up to the front door. I immediately got a room at the Marlin Beach Hotel (remember "Where the Boys Are"winking smiley with a bellhop to help us with our luggage.

So, nothing new - same principles - just modern ways to buy and sell.

To me, this demonstrates the concept of link bait.

I'm no fan of data mining, but to say it's the same as racial profiling reveals a real lack of understanding about what racial profiling is, what it means, and its history and context in America.

Sorry, Jamie - i really value your opinions and expertise, but you're way off the mark here.

Technically, this is called price discrimination.

That's not what is happening. Mac users are being shown more expensive options, not being charged more for the same room.

You wear a Rolex to the Toyota dealer, and the salesperson is going to steer you to the fully loaded Land Cruiser and away from the Camry.

I hope us Mac cheapskates are savvy enough to sort by price! winking smiley

I agree with OWC Jamie - sites are able to prejudge you due to data mining, like law enforcement can prejudge you for the color of ones skin.

Case in point...

...back in the '80s I was living in a villa on the ocean in Laguna Beach. Next door was a huge house that had been custom built by a man named Boyd Jefferies. I believe he was in trouble for some kind of stock deal and had lost the house.

As I heard the story, a couple from the midwest were visiting Laguna and had been at the beach where they saw and fell in love with the house. They went straight from the beach, in shorts and typical beach clothing, to a local major real estate office.

The agent, who happened to be working that day, apparently took one look at them and decided that they weren't valid clients.

The upshot was that they went to another office and bought the house. :@#$%&:

Lesson learned?

People who want to make money, don't pre-judge, they "qualify" possible clients. There are a lot of buyers at local exotic car dealerships in the Newport Beach area, that coming from the beach, might be wearing clothes and sneakers with holes in them.
