My week of concerts has sadly come to an end

Last Tuesday - The Cult. Great show. Billy Duffy is awesome. I posted about the show last week.

Last Friday - Buddy Guy with Jonny Lang. I was not impressed by Jonny Lang at all. Yeah, he can play, but his emotions/facial expressions seem forced and contrived. I was probably also upset b/c he played for way too long (I think an hour and a half). Buddy Guy was AMAZING. I can't believe he's like 75 or 76 years old. I think his take on Hoochie Coochie Man was my favorite of the evening. He's also very witty and tells great stories during the show. He brought out that young kid, 13-y/o Quinn Sullivan (I think his name was mentioned here several times in the past) and I was blown away. I would have paid to see an hour and a half of Quinn rather than Jonny Lang.

Last Sunday - Van Halen. Meh. Technically the Van Halen family sounded great and tight, but I really don't care for David Lee Roth (and I care even less for Sammy Hagar). I think the audio mix was not very good and DLR wasted too much time talking. Also, the songs sounded exactly the same as the studio versions. I don't think they made any effort to try and mix things up, change stuff around, etc. Boring. The last straw was that DLR has been requiring all venues to keep their air conditioning off during the show b/c the cold air is "not good" for his vocal cords. Sounds like typical DLR selfishness. It was very uncomfortable in the Toyota Center and I just wanted the concert to end so I could leave.

Last night - Coldplay. WOW. One of the greatest concerts I've been to in a long time. Very creative audio and visuals. Chris Martin has crazy energy that you can't believe. Passed out wristbands that light up at various times during the show that created an amazing effect. I'm sure there are youtube clips showing this. I just wish they would have ended on Fix You instead of Every Teardrop...

Anyway, not sure what to do with my evenings now that my concert marathon is over.

Sounds like a fun week. I had a similar run of concerts last year, and needed a few months to recover. I saw Buddy Guy a few years ago and had the same impression...some of those old guys make the young guys look...old.

I saw Coldplay at the Gorge Ampitheater in George, WA a few years ago and I was blown away. I didn't expect much, but I left with a profound respect for the band. They reminded me of U2 of yore.

Funny, I decided to do a week of concerts too, starting July 6 with DMB.

I was cool with Yellow, but like Decay I haven't been able to get my head around Coldplay. There certainly are worse bands. They just do nothing for me.

Talking about seemingly endless amounts of energy... I've tickets to see the one and only Iggy & The Stooges opening for Morrissey later this year. As big a Moz fan as I am, I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing Iggy Pop.

I like Coldplay, sorry. Not sure if they'd be high on my list of bands to see live though.

OK, someone may take it all off during that show, you know.

i really like Radiohead.

lots of people don't, but lots of people do. i am somewhat surprised that they are as popular as they are, selling out shows, given the odd direction their music has taken.

you never know what band might 'click' with your ears, heart, or head.

would love to see Wilco. I'm hoping that Jeff will be in attendance at the Bragg show and they can duet on some Woody Guthrie stuff :-)

Totally agree about Buddy Guy. Just epitomizes "living legend," and he's still playing better than 99% of guys a third of his age. It's a crime that he isn't a household name.

Yeah, there were empty seats in the small venue where he was playing. The guy with whom I went to the show was commenting on how people probably just don't know about it as much as they do someone like B.B. King.
