I have 25,000 Dividend miles on US Airways that I've accumulated over the years. I received a warning notice from US Airways that the miles will expire if I do not book a flight by this weekend (or pay $150 to reinstate the miles).

I was thinking of flying out to visit family members. A one-way ticket on US Airways to my destination costs $160 and requires a stop in a different city. I have a free Amtrak ticket home, so my total cost would be $160 (but a long train ride home).

Another airline offers a round trip, nonstop ticket to and from my destination for $160. this is the faster option, but I would lose my US Airways miles forever.

While the shorter flight is a bonus, I actually enjoy the relaxation and legroom of the train.

So what does the collective wisdom of the MRF say? $160 gets me to and from my destination, but I have a few choices on how to do it.

Or I could just stay home, lose the miles and just spend the weekend home with the Poochie and some cold ones?

It is probably too late to donate them to a charity but worth a call to U.S. Air and see who they any affiliate programs with.

Or visit U.S. Air's website or the Red Cross or Make-A-Wish.

If your miles haven't yet expired you just need to accrue more miles. There are other ways of doing this than taking a flight. You can join the US Airways Dining for Miles Rewards Network <usairways.rewardsnetwork.com> and have a meal at a listed restaurant. You could rent a car and have the miles earned posted to your account. You could open up a credit card that gives you Dividend Miles <www.usairways.com/en-US/dividendmiles/creditcards/default.html>. Lots of options.

yeah, there's lots of ways to extend the 18 month restriction. Another way is to buy a US Airways gift card. I extended mine a couple of years ago by getting a free quote from some insurance company. But I have something like 135,000 miles at stake.

I called USAirways this morning and they offered to let me fly on Monday and reinstate my miles. Now my inlaws are happy (I actually enjoy spending time with them) and I get to get outta town for a few days. grinning smiley
