I have some Jos. A Bank suits which have worn well. They used to run all kinds of promo codes and coupons, I think they've gotten away from that.

Find a local suit shop. Chains are pricey. Men's Wearhouse doubly so. However... I did buy a suit there because I needed it the next day. Pricey...woof.

Then again I wear a suit perhaps twice a decade.

Find a local suit shop. ...

yeah, in the past I got most of my suites custom made by our local taylor back home, always good materials and perfect fit, but he died about 5 years ago. I asked my Mom who took over the business and she said the new guy is an incompetent and I better stay away.

Believe it or not, I recently bought one from Burlington Coat Factory at a fair price. The fit was good (non-hemmed, so they needed fit to length). If there's one nearby, may be worth a look.

Burlington often has nice suits at very good prices and a tailor for basic alterations in most stores.

I can't get very much off the rack at department stores because I have a shoulder and bicep that just isn't normal in the 44R that the rest of me wears. I ended up getting a 46R at Jos. A. Banks and they tailored it down. The arm is still a bit tight, but better than anything else I found. They regularly (likely every week it seems) have sales - never pay retail there.

I almost had to get a fully tailored suit and that sticker price was scary.

Sounds like an excuse to visit Hong Kong to me. Nothing like a bespoken suit.

cbelt's right about Men's Wearhouse being pricey, but...

the suit I finally bought from them was primo: soft lines and it fits like it was built just for me from scratch. From my perspective, worth the money.

On the other hand, I too bought a suit from Burlington Coat Factory and was pleased w/ the purchase.

Jos. A. Bank has ads every day on TV with ridiculous promotions, like "Buy one suit, get two free!" and "50% off everything in the store!" So you can assume their 'list' prices are just made up. I have never bought anything there, but then I haven't bought a suit in 20 years. I have one dark suit I wear to weddings, funerals, and evening functions requiring a suit (all rare events), and I have some older suits that don't fit me any more. Maybe one day. . .

I think I bought most of my suits over the decades at the Harvard Coop. I did help my son Andy buy a suit at the local Gentlemen's Warehouse about the time he was a senior in high school, and as I recall the experience was relatively painless.

While you're over there, a pair of shoes from John Lobb would compliment the suit.

Honestly, if I had to buy a "new" suit, I wouldn't. I'd buy one at Salvation Army or Goodwill. Last suits I bought were at an auction about 12 years ago. Since then, I've probably worn a suit maybe 5 times (a few weddings, and a funeral). If I ever need another suit and if the ones I have don't fit, I'd just go to one of the above stores and get one. My dad did that for my one sister's wedding. He was visiting me in Florida when my sister and her boyfriend decided to fly to Ft. Myers (where his parents lived) and get married. My dad was PO'd for a few reasons, one being that all he had brought were vacation clothes. So he went to Goodwill, bought a suit for like $10, then donated it back when the wedding was over.

Very happy with JC Penney on my last few clothing quests. Best thing is they have an off-the-rack tuxedo option where you can choose the various components in your size-- I think it was $149 or $179 total.

I've also developed a liking for straight-hem button downs and they have quite a nice selection at my nearest store; could be a local variant due to predominantly Mexican clientele...

Another happy Goodwill shopper. Mine fit perfectly and I have gotten a number of compliments. I just got the coat so I need a pair of pants but the coat is long enough to conceal all my vital organs.

Good to know about Men's Wearhouse. I have to say, the commercials are effective enough so when the time comes for me to get a suit, I'd probably think of them first.

thanks, I was wondering what I was gonna do with all these money. Lighting up the grill with $100 bills got boring.

EDIT: You know what, I might as well get the Crocodile Shoes for only Pounds Sterling 8,567.00. What is that in USD, 13.4k?

The middle and upper lines of Banks suite (Signature and Signature Plus) are pretty decent but the secret is to watch their sales rabidly. Their list prices and 90% of their sales are total BS but their deep discount sales are worth pouncing on. I bought a nice seersucker suit for less than $150 a year ago and just bought two dark wool suits a few weeks ago.

Men's Wearhouse, Burlington, Filene's, Kohls...all sell perfectly good suits too but if as with most retail stores you just step in and pay the rack price they're going to make mad money on you.

I am with rz & Speedy, thrift shop or =.

Husband dies, wife donates all his cloths to the thrift shop. I have found several good quality, well fitting jackets there. Might of spent as much as $5.- ea.

The last two suits I've worn (for a funeral and wedding, respectively) were bought off eBay, believe it or not. Read the auctions carefully, stick with simple coors and fabrics, non-smoking households, etc. and you can do pretty well. Of course, it helps that I can pretty much wear an off-the-rack 42L.
