how is this possible?

just as EURO 2012 was playing, about 20 minutes into the game, all frozen out.

It turns out there was no internet.

it turns out my modem was acting up

I went to target, got a new modem, plugged it in. I was now scrambling for a way to find out COMCAST number, and call them (VOIP dead, I was gonna call from cell phone)

But guess what, I plugged the new modem in and it just works.

How is this possible? don't you have to call Comcast to tell them the new MAC?

I thought so, too. Maybe Comcast gives you a grace period before the new modem gets sent to the "walled garden."

Now that you have your phone working, you might want to call Comcast and ask.

I had the same problem and was watching on cable, think it was the satellite feed.

Arsenal beat Manchester United, and Mario Lemieux had a hat trick, Barry Bonds hit a grand slam, Jackie Robinson stole home, Oscar Robertson had a triple double, John Stockton had 21 assists, while Tony Hawk and Don Allison both nailed perfect nine hundreds. You didn't miss anything.

Either a problem at ESPN Bristol or with the satellite/fiber feed but the game was out everywhere.

He's right you know! The game was a horrible miss-match.
My ESPN3 experience was fine until literally the last 20 seconds of the game when it just stopped- dead.

back to my question: it appears the box has been opened before, Ethernet cable and USB cable is missing, there was no seal on the box. I think someone else activated this with Comcast...

Are there any signs that the box was opened before (e.g. broken seal, missing accessories, large sticker saying "open box/returned item" ) ?
I'm wondering if maybe someone else already registered it with Comcast before returning it.

Ethernet cable and USB cable is missing

also CD envelope seal is broken.

The box itself didn't seem to have any seal.

The box was tied up in one of those anti-theft devices.

Looking at the content of the box, missing cables, open CD, crumbled papers, it's clear the modem is a return. Box is in mint condition though. I have 45 days to return it if I change my mind (and I don't mind throwing in the missing cable if the target customer service bring that up).

On the other hand, my old modem which refused to connect before, now it's up and running. So I have 2 different modems, probably each with its own IP.

The old one (which seemed defective) should run at 6 Mbps, that's what I pay for, but with their TURBO-Boost I alway get 20 Mbps in any speed test.

With the new modem I only get 3 Mbps. No matter which test site, which server.

Things are interesting.

I managed to resume streaming of Euro 2012 with the new slow modem, and quality was very good on a 42 HDTV.

So what to do now. My old modem was (is?) DOCSIS 2.0. The new one (open box?) is also DOCSIS 2.0.

I plan to get a DOCSIS 3.0 to activate with Comcast using MY account. Then return this mystery modem to TARGET.

Same thing happened to me about two years back -- at Target no less -- when I purchased a cable modem, went to open it, and discovered its contents had obviously been used before. I guess that's SOP for them.

Went to BestBuy and bought a DOCIS3. Worked at first but then started having all manner of trouble with it on my system -- couldn't connect, or couldn't hold connection, and when it did, exceptionally low speeds. Went back to the previous type, was back up to 28+ MBps.

last night I have 3 GB used this month.

I downloaded Lion. Now my account shows still 3 GB.

It's clear that I am using someone else's comcast modem. As long as they don't enforce the 250 GB limit, I don't see a major issue. I am on a tight schedule, will straighten it out with Comcast when I get back form vacation.

Yes, the new modem has already been provisioned by Comcast for someone else.

My bet is it will eventually stop working. A call to Comcast to give them the MAC address should avoid that.
