and free Parallels Desktop 7 Software for Mac or Filemaker Bento (need neither)

2GB RAM?

Are you nuts?

DO NOT BUY A MAC WITH LESS THAN 4GB RAM.

Have they got a similar deal for a 4GB version?

For her needs 2GB should be enough. Relaunch Safari every few hours.

SSD makes RAM less critical. She will love it.

2 GB is fine for a home user - works for me with 10.6.8

You have clearly never used an SSD-booting mac with 2 GB of RAM. It's absolutely fine.

In this particular instance it's the lack of keyboard backlighting that I consider the main downside.

Depends on what you're talking about. 2 GB RAM on any HDD-booting machine running snow or later can be pretty horrible, particularly with i3/15/i7 processors.

Agreed.

I'll never buy another 'Book without it.

That too, is a personal experience.

My 2.0 Santa Rosa MB came with 2G, and it felt truly pokey. Upgraded the HD to a 7200rpm version, couldn't feel any improvement. Went to 4G, same thing. Fewer beach balls but otherwise, it didn't feel any faster. Swapped out the 320G HD for a 60G SSD and WOW!

My next Mac will be a mini, iMac or Book that can take 16G o' RAM (except for an Air) but the *first* upgrade will be an SSD boot drive.

At this moment, I'm working on my Crucial M4, 256G SSD, making it the primary boot drive for my current mini. It's maxed at 8G. One day I might replace the 320G internal HD with a similar sized SSD, but that's not on the Must Do list.

But I won't go back to HDDs. At least not for a primary boot drive.
