I was one of the legions of people who lost power in the East Coast Storms Friday night, and now the battery of my MacBook Pro will not charge. I have tried plugging it in to two outlets that I know work, and the little amber light does not come on on the adapter. Any ideas? Can I use a white MacBook, not Pro, charger?

Yes, any MagSafe charger should be able to charge it, but might take longer. If the battery is totally drained you might not be able to startup the computer with the lower rated charger until the battery has charged a bit.

Does that mean that you're seeing the amber LED when using the white MacBook charger?

Could just be that the green/amber LED died. Does the menubar icon say that it isn't charging too?

I have a wall wart that seems to be fried (it's device works OK on batteries). Was your power brick plugged into at least a surge protector?

I had some weirdness with my MBP charger this weekend.

When the power first flickered, the green light went out on my charger and it wasn't "seen" anymore by my MBP.

I unplugged it, let it sit for 5 minutes, and when I plugged it back in the thing was fine.

I guess some sort of protection-circuit kicked in.

The menubar icon says it's running on battery power. No charging symbol.

Yes it was, and the surge protector is still working. Go figure.

I am going to have to wait till Thursday to get a new adapter because I'm starting a new freelance project and have meetings Mon. and Tues. and of course Wed. is a holiday.

I took off the MacBook adapter and plugged in the MBP adapter, and it's working again! Thank you for saving me an hour's drive.

No mystery. The protector did exactly what its numeric specs said it would do. You might want to read the specs to learn what others recommend and what the manufacturer claims are often different. Your protector did exactly what specifications said it would do.
