...create an .icns file from a .jpg?

Though I've never tried it in SL, it seems I just do a Save As in Previewo- jpg to icns.

I found the Export in Lion's Preview (v5.5.2) but I don't have an option to export to .icns.

The idea is to put a custom icon on my m4 so it stands out among all the other external volumes.

Do I start with a 512x512 jpg or png?

I guess I can boot into Snow and give that a try.

You mean it's not just Get Info on the jpg, copy the icon, then Get Info on the drive and paste the icon?

How do I know what size the icns is for a given jpg/png.

How does FastIcns works?

FastIcns' interfacePick your favourite file, folder or image and drag it over the cube; check the preview and then double-click the cube to save as an icns file, as a resource–fork–only file or as a PNG image. Or you can drop another file holding the Command key to assign it the icon.

Can I change the sizes of the saved icons?

Yes. From the Save dialog, choose "Dimensions" and you'll be able to choose which sizes to save. Notice that 256x256 and 512x512 formats are totally experimental and were not tested as Mac OS X 10.4 doesn't support them.
