I had one that I occasionally thought wouldn't wake, then I figured out that the machine was awake but the display wasn't lighting up. I would hit the brightness controls and the display would come right on.

Before I figured that out, I did a hard restart with the power switch several times because I was so sure it was still sleeping.

Even if you're in a similar situation, it's still a sign that something is wonky.

My daughter had all sorts of problems with this with her MBP. If you search the Apple forums, there are a gazillion people who have the problem, too. There can be many causes. Hers was from a bad memory slot. It took literally months of trouble shooting to figure that out though. Now that we pulled the chip from that slot, it wakes from sleep as normal, now.

I had a weird sleep/wake/cover problem that I found the cause of.

I had a MBP sitting on top of a closed white MacBook, and the MBP wouldn't wake from sleep.

The problem was the sleep magnet from the MacBook below it was making the MBP think that the cover was still closed. Repositioning the MBP fixed the problem.

Anything magnetic around your MBP?

And one good test to see if the computer is actually running, but maybe the screen is disabled, is to use the Caps Lock key, and see if it's LED lights up.
