Oddly, that ad promotes the Tupolev Tu-114, but that's not the plane in the photo.

The Tu-114 was something else, really a magnificent airplane. Essentially it used the wings and powerplants of the Tu-95 "Bear," which is still in service. Those turboprops had some advantages over the pure jets of the day in terms of efficiency and range.

The plane in the ad is a Tu-104.

Whichever Tu- it is in the photo, I flew in a similar one back in 1968. It was essentially a converted twin-jet bomber, and shook and roared like one. The air pressurization was abysmal. The stewardesses handed out hard candies to suck on, but they didn't help.

Uh, the Tu-144 was the Soviet supersonic transport... the "Concordski" as it was nicknamed.

To say it didn't have a stellar safety record (after crashing at the Paris Airshow...) is an understatement. Neat aircraft though.

We still haven't covered the 141, 411, and 414 permutations.

It's been revealed that the cause of the crash of the 144 at Paris was because the pilot over stressed the airframe by taking extreme evasive maneuvers to avoid a French aircraft that was loitering in the area. The French were very keen on observing the 144 from the air. Naturally this was all kept very secret for a long time. But the crash was not due to any design fault of the 144. (Which is not to say the 144 didn't have design faults.)

Interesting. I remember the TV news film of the crash, because I had what some might call a premonition of it. For a few years I had a recurring dream, in which a large, advanced (maybe delta wing) aircraft attempts a steep ascent, and, losing power, falls back to earth, crashing. The crash at the Paris air show seemed to mimic the dream exactly. After seeing that, the dreams stopped.

To this day I have no explanation.

Yup... the pilot shoved the yoke to avoid what he percived to be an imminent collision (turned out it wasn't quite THAT close, but it was TOO close...), and broke the aircrafts back.

The design problems that kept it not hauling passengers (but it WAS the fastest mail-cargo plane EVER...) were the engines that were just a LITTLE too keen on shedding "extra" turbine blades.

The Paris Airshow incident gave it an unfair reputation for unreliability which hid its ACTUAL unreliability. smiling smiley

I flew Aeroflot once in the late 70s. A semi-scary experience. There was a mechanic on the wing as we were waiting for takeoff, tightening bolts with a wrench. Inside the cabin I noticed a small compartment with a single Russian word on the door, so I reached for my Russian-English dictionary to find out what it was. Translation: rope.
