[Friendly Political Ranting Jetblue Pilots] Not guilty by reason of insanity

U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson of Texas made the ruling in favor of Clayton Osbon, 49, the Associated Press reported. In her decision, Robinson said that at the time, Osbon suffered "from a severe mental disease or defect that impaired his ability to appreciate the nature, quality, or wrongfulness of his behavior."

After a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation, Osbon was found mentally competent to stand trial. At the time, Judge Robinson said Osbon was "not now suffering from a mental disease or defect."

However, he will now be sent to a federal mental health facility in Fort Worth, Texas, for further evaluation.

Doesn't sound much better than jail to me. I'm leaning towards inappropriately harsh treatment considering there's little doubt of mental health issues.
Is this somehow supposed to send a message to other pilots not to suffer similar breakdowns? Is there much likelihood the guy is going to fight his way through and try to pilot another commercial flight?

he won't have a serious career flying big jets ever again. Maybe cargo stuff if he is lucky.

I can see that it's probably not a good idea for him to do any flying again; I just don't see why he should be treated as a threat to the general populace.

The process is a mutual agreement between prosecution and defense and it is a minimum security facility.
He waived his right to a jury trial in lieu of this process.

One analysis by a licensed psychologist that addressed only whether he was fit for trial, the breakdown was "temporary" and now another one to determine if release back into society with just (likely) probation is appropriate or not.

Jury trial or see the man at the facility to help the judge rule what your path to (some degree of) freedom should be ?

Which would you pick ?

This was Osbon's choice.
