I remember those being all over Western Pa when I was a kid. We used play with their shells. Many GI Joe characters died in the vicious jaws of a cicada. Transformers did a bit better as I recall. The battles were epic though.

I've been lucky - twice in the last two days I've seen a cicada killer wasp snaring its prey. The wasp will sting the cicada to numb it, then it will lay its eggs in the cicada's body and if able to fly the somewhat larger insect back to its nest to gestate.
Impressive!
