if I travel with some kids (7 and 3) and I want to take a TAXI from airport back home, where do I get child seats? or it's OK to do without child seats in cases like these? the cost of the TAXI/Limo is about the same as renting a car and I would like to avoid driving after 16 hours in airports/planes.

alternative would be to make a car reservation and specify that I need child set and booster, although I have seen them overlook these items before.

If the first thing you think of when you think of Taxi Drivers is "safe"...

Someone gave me a hard time about hauling one around. Her friend got in a taxi the next day to come see her and the cab got t-boned. The family had bumps and bruises but they were flying around in there, no one had seta belts on.

If you make a reservation with a limo company, they might be able to provide car seats as part of the deal.

no way to get around it unless you bring along the car seats. you could try calling ahead and see if you can get a bigger car to accommodate the kids (some have booster seats built in or available).

I gave up the idea of a TAXI and made a reservation for a rental car, and reserved (paid for!) 1 child seat and 1 booster seat.

I ride taxis all the time here in Baltimore and have never seen the least accommodation for children. My assumption is that taxis are exempt.

...they had a big thing about the fact that adults get into accidents because they don't buckle up in taxis.....one woman had her nose broken when a taxi stopped suddenly and she hit the plastic partition........


.....so I would say for a child......to get one.....

From a safety perspective, after a certain size (an average 2-3 year old) the increased safety provided by a dedicated child seat sharply decreases. That's not to say child seats are unnecessary after age 3. A child will be more safe in a seat than simply riding buckled in a car, however, the additional margin of safety becomes smaller and smaller after age 3 or so.

Personally if you choose to go this route I would just make sure both kids are buckled up. The last thing you want is for them to ride unbuckled or in your lap or something. I tend to agree with you, you will be fatigued after travelling for 16 hours and if you're not comfortable driving, you shouldn't.

I can only tell you about the law here in Oregon. A few years ago the legislature decided to adopt a new law that would require people in taxis to wear seat belts, including the driver. We went to the fact finding hearing and pointed out that often, as drivers, we were in more danger from our passengers then from accidents. Imagine a tweeker in the back seat reaching across your should and grabbing the belt crossing your chest. Now they've got you in a noose. I can think of more than one occasion where I had to jump out of the drivers seat and get the cab between myself and the passenger.

So they decided to exempt the driver but require everyone else to wear their belts. They also made us put in a sign that said passengers were required to wear seat belts. We already had a reg that required us to have a seat belt available for every rider. The driver is not responsible for enforcing the law, although I always insist that kids are belted in.

As to car seats the problem there is its impractical if not impossible to carry them around with us, especially if you understand there are something like three different sizes depending on the size/age of the child. As a father and grand father I'd also be concerned about hygiene.

Other state law will vary. Across the river in Washington the taxi driver is required to wear a seat belt.

We just got back from vacation, and last night while trying to fall asleep in an airport hotel I counted up how many trips our 9 year old son has been on: twenty-five! Eight foreign trips, seventeen domestic, you have to figure it's probably 70 or 80 different flights. Thirty states, twelve foreign countries.

Nine years old, and he's skinny, so we still take a booster seat with us when we travel. We've never traveled without something for him. When he was about four we got a RideSafer Car Seat Travel Vest. It comes in two sizes. It is awkward & goofy looking, and expensive. But I can't imagine not having a car seat or something like it. Car crashes are the leading cause of death among kids. He's in a car seat when I drive to the market, so you can bet I put him in a car seat whether it's a taxi in Zagreb or a rental car in Kona.
