after 35 years, i finally bought my 2nd motorcycle-yippee!

i hadn't actively ridden a motorcycle in 35+ years.

i've had the itch to get on a bike for the past 2.5 seasons.

i took the msf course 6 weeks ago and LOVED being on a bike again (even if it was a suzuki gs250)

i've been scouring craigslist and local ebay auctions for a bike.

i've ridden four different bikes since the course and two follow-up private lessons with the same msf folks.

i wanted to keep my bike purchase under $2500

i rode: 2005 honda 599, 2004 suzuki sv650s, 2001 kawasaki zr-7s, 2003 kawasaki zr-7s.

well, yesterday morning i went out early and rode yet another craigslist bike.

11k miles - two owners - 1st traded in at kawasaki dealer where 2nd bought it. 1st owner 7k miles. 2nd owner 4k miles. all maintenance records. no accidents. asked for $3k. settled for less than $2500.

all good.

wiggle smiley

yup yup.

be well.

Biking is undoubtedly one of the few things in life I still look forward to. I got back in the saddle again with a Honda Shadow more than a decade ago. I ride a VTX 1300 now. My rides started with a spin around town. Now, I am gone for days and don't really want to come back. Enjoy.

Have you considered the price of the zero? smiling smiley

In seriousness, the latest round of electric motorcycles are awesome, except for price and they won't work for multi-day trips or even extended day trips.

I think I'm still on the pre-order list for the Brammo Empulse. First ebike to do 100mph and 100 mile range (not at the same time, obviously), and it has a real 6 speed manual transmission, but they jacked the price up from 14k to 17k base. When that price drops in half, I'd seriously consider it.

Take about $8000 off those prices in "tax incentives."

OK, still too much.

I see what you did there.

As a *second* bike to one you already own, the Zero would be pretty cool.

Only 114 mile means it's a short-range bike, and at $11, 500 (Zero-S) with another $500 for a quick charger, it's very pricey.

As the owner of a ST1300, I'd like the street version to look a little sleeker, and less like something a Power Ranger might ride.

At least it's not made in Japan.

2006 Kawi 750S

Nice looking bike, rob.

Good size too. You could put a little distance on it if you were up for an overnight, or three day jaunt. (More actually, if you were of a mind.

I've got a another trip to Montana in September. We didn't make it to Glacier, as we were on a tight schedule and one of the bikes had a battery failure.

I love riding. And accessorizing my bike.

Congratulations, rob.

Ride safe, and be well.

I don't believe that is accurate. My understanding is that the biggest motorcycle accident demographic is - and has always been - young, inexperienced males who ride overpowered crotch rockets.

thanks all for the thumbs up.

i've been wanting to get back on a motorcycle for the past 3 seasons but somehow work, family, my own priorities (was i being self-indulgent?) always thwarted me.

in may, i finished two big projects and thought i needed a moment to re-charge.

and so i took the msf course during my "break".

my family and college-aged daughters are supportive but each has pulled me aside and warned me, "if you get yourself hurt, i'll hurt you worse!".

i rode a motorcycle a long time ago. and back then i was a total knucklehead recklessly speeding my way forward.

(truth be told, back then i was a total knucklehead about nearly everything!)

this time around, i'm not looking to go quick but just to go.

ymmv.

be well.

You are correct.

CDC reports the highest mortality level in people in their early 20's, but there's a surprising number of older young adults and midlife adults who die on motorcycles: [www.cdc.gov]

The also report a 55% increase in mortality rates among bike riders from 2001 through 2008.

Be careful--watch out for the crazies text-messaging behind the wheel...
