Right now I'm looking for an inexpensive basics case and or cover for my iPod. Not sure whether to go with the Smart Case or Cover. Any users Out there have either? Comments?

Just between the two Apple cases: If you don't care for (or want to spring the extra money for) the Leather (Smart Cover only), and were planning on going with a Polyurethane option anyhow, then definitely get the Smart Cover.

With the Smart Cover, you'll be protecting the aluminum back/edges/etc.

If you want Leather, then the Smart Cover is the only option from Apple and you'll need to go 3rd party for complete coverage, or at least pick up a 'backing' cover, like I did, so I can still keep/use the Apple cover, but also have the back protected.

My iPad3 is protected by a plastic back shell. The iPad got dropped from a five foot height by my wife while in a sleeve while in her bag, breaking the plastic shell but no damage to the iPad. I like the sleeve because the iPad goes through airport security while in the sleeve. The sleeve goes in a computer bag for air travel but the sleeve is all that is used otherwise when being transported. The sleeve was $5 shipped from an eBay seller.

i got my son a leather cover for his iPad 2. though it's really nice i felt it was too bulky so when it came time for mom's iPad3 i decided to look elsewhere. i really liked the Smart Cover a friend hadand was excited by the thought of the Smart Case as i wanted to protect both sides. i took a special trip to the Apple Store to see it and was sorely disappointed. it felt cheesy.

i wound up getting this for the back from Amazon when it was on sale for $5 since it works with a Smart Cover. (which i have yet to buy-maybe i don't really need it...)

I prefer the Cyber Acoustics/Maroo covers with corner bumper guards. Its one of the few cases that really protects the corners of the iPad from my experience. Nice cases with a variety of designs. Has protected my iPad 2 from various bumps and falls. (kids and wife)

My B.I.L got a smart case and ended up returning it because the lack of protection. He got a hardshell with swivel. I like the swivel portion, but thats it.

If you want a basic hard shell (TPU or Hard plastic) they can be had cheap, less than $5 shipped, no name similar to what graylocks posted. (search for TPU ipad 3 case on amazon/ebay/monoprice) I bought a TPU case for my iPad 2 from monoprice before the cyber acoustics case came in.
