Just upgraded to Lion — where's the.....???!
Posted by: dmag

Hi,

Just moved from Snow Leopard to Lion, and now can't find stuff.

I'm going to dig into YouTube vids to try to catch up, but in the meantime can you tell me a couple of things?

1. I used to see a list of volumes in the left sidebar, including the hard drive. I could click on that and get access to libraries, etc. That's gone. I can't see how to access the HD and mainvolume.

2. I wanted to drag out my Firefox folder from the user Library while I do a migration from my last system, then drop the Firefox folder back in and be up to date. I can't find the user Library, per my question above. Is there a document or video somewhere that shows the differences in going to Lion, where stuff is, etc?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome!

1. Go to the Finder menu and select Preferences. Select the Sidebar tab and check off the things you want to appear.

2. The Library folder is invisible in Lion, in Apple's effort to keep lay people from rooting around in dangerous places. You can access your User Library folder in the finder from the Go menu and selecting Go to Folder... then enter ~/Library/.

From there, I think your Firefox folder should be in the same place, under Application Support.

I don't have Lion yet, and I dread the day.... but would it let me make an alias of the Library folder once I've located it using the workaround you describe? Put it in the Dock maybe?

Another questions, folks...

Since Apple decided to save a buck and not include a restore disk as in all past OS releases, what's to be done if the computer has an issue and you want to use Disk Utility for a possible fix?

Thanks.

hold Option and a hidden disk partition with utilities appears in boot manager. pick that one & boot from it.

'course, if your hard drive dies or becomes corrupt... better have a bootable external ready...

Thanks...so if you want a bootable external you have to spring for $30 to get one from the app store?

That's messed up, if so.

If you download the Lion Installer to another computer, you can save the ESD.dmg found in the installer and use it to install Lion on other volumes, including a backup external drive.

But move the Lion installer to another place and/or grab the ESD.dmg out of it *before* installing Lion on that drive, as it all disappears once you do the actual install.

You can also clone your boot drive to another drive.

Where's the series of periods, four question marks and an exclamation mark?

They're all still here!
