How much money did you lose by selling Apple too quickly?

Say you sold it today at $600. Mine is $118,000. That is assuming it split only once in the 2000's.

well, those 500 shares from the '90s would be 2000 shares today...

What was the price per share for 1990 and 1999, approximately?

would be 2000 shares today...

I sold mine when it "peaked" at $20. Must have been around the time Amelio was in charge. I think I had only a $1000 invested. I am not worried. It'll go back down.

A bit over half a mil. Of course, that assumes I would have been able to hold onto it through the roughness of 2008. If I still had it all today, it would be buying me a house, all cash, since apparently, it's impossible to buy a house with a loan in my neighborhood and price range.

Sold at $200 thinking it'll never go higher. Only $16000 loss.
However, I bought those shares at $80 before the split so I'm not crying.

My 75 shares (150 after split) would have been worth around $90,000. Not that I'm bitter.., and much less after reading the above posts.

I procrastinated and put off buying..

If I had bought when I first wanted too AND when I had the cash available - the difference in what it would have been worth and what I now have would be about $700,000

If I had that cash available when I really wanted to first buy - I would have $1.5 million

excuse me while I go cry in my corn flakes this morning.

Yes but even if you had $1.5 million in stock do you really think you would sell it all and bank it right now?

No idea offhand, but suffice it to say that an $8 swing in AAPL today equates to more than what my entire investment was back then...

If I'd kept some I sold when I bought my last house, I'd have had another $116,000.

Quit rubbing it in. smiling smiley

I last bought at $450 - so I'm not complaining.

The question now is when exactly to buy more? The price has fluctuated around $600 for a couple months now.

I would have been better of buying Apple stock than that Quadra 950.

Think of it this way. If you had 2000 shares of Apple stock, rather than just let it sit there, you could sell covered calls every month. $25-$30 out of the money calls might go for $15-$20. Selling 20 contracts (100 shares per contract) would bring in $30,000 - $40,000 in income EVERY month.

Every once in a while, the stock might rally and jump above your strike price. When that happens, you would lose some money to buy back the calls at a higher price than you sold them for if you wanted to keep the stock. But probably 8 or 9 out of 10 times the calls you sold would remain out of the money and be pure profit.
