ExFAT USB drive not mounting-
Posted by: mikebw

32GB USB flash drive, formatted on my Hackintosh to ExFAT, works OK, but only on some computers. It works fine on my Hackintosh, on my MacPro at work, but I took it with me to a friend's house this weekend to give them a file but it wouldn't mount on either their MacBook or Windows XP laptops. Not sure of which OS X version, but both OS's said it could not be recognized. Maybe they just had old OS's?

exFAT (FAT64)

Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
exFAT partitions created with OS X 10.6.5 are inaccessible from Windows 7
Not all Windows versions support exFAT. See disadvantages.
exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
Maximum file size: 16 EiB
Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB

Why did you format it exFAT?

Why did you format it exFAT?

Because I thought that would be the best way to make it fully read/write compatible from either OS X 10.6.6< or Windows 7 on my Hackintosh. Previously I had setup an internal 1TB SATA drive with Win7 installed on it that I wanted to be able to use for additional read/write space while in OS X, but I found that this was only possible with ExFAT. For external non-bootable drives I guess I should just stick to MS-DOS.

the main reason for exFAT is for larger file support, IMHO.
