Look forward to watching some of that tonight.

Considering their accomplishments I think it's fine to call them Women!

But they're just so teeny weeny !!!! I just wonder, after a childhood living in the gym, once they reach 'retirement age' at, oh, say 17.. do they completely rebel and spend the next few years hollering "OMG ! PONIES !!!" ???

well, Mary Lou just got 2 new hips. Worn out by her 40s. So, in a way, I'm just like an Olympic gold medalist!

This current team is noticeably curvier than that "Magnificent 7" or whatever they were called from '96. Apparently the training around female gymnastics has changed a lot so that it's not so abusive to the young athletes. Notice these young ladies look more their age, they aren't 17 year olds who look 12.

The age requirement was increased in 1997. For the '96 games the competitors had to turn 15 in the calendar year. for 2000, they were supposed to turn 16 in the calendar year.

I think someone forgot to tell the Chinese though.

I work with a former collegiate-level gymnast who's about 24 now, and a mess, with bad knees, ankles, shoulders, and elbows. Basically anything that bends, is broke. She can't walk up or down stairs without difficulty and has trouble getting in and out of a cab. She can't carry things, either, but that isn't a problem for now; she's gorgeous and no male on the planet can stand to walk past her if she's holding anything.

Whatever she got out of her gymnastics program over the 15 years she trained cannot be worth what she's going to face over the next 70 years.

The Chinese team is unusually old this year - one 17 year old, three 20 year olds, another 18.
That's being blamed for their poor showing this year.

Yeah. Girls gymnastics has gotten too weird and creepy for me to watch any more. That's all I'll say for now - that's a topic for another thread.

I'm proud of our young ladies and think that gymnasts are perhaps the best all around atheletes of any sport. What they can get their bodies to do is really hard to believe possible.
