Lack of IMAP is pretty much a deal killer for me anymore. Especially with a desktop, laptop, iPhone and an iPad. Having to clean up mailboxes on 4 devices is rediculous.

But can't the Outlook mail be set up as an Exchange on iOS? And, what about on Mac OS X? Can Mail set up Outlook as Exchange as well?

Nobody wants to know this, but aol has the best web email interface going. And it is free. And it works just ducky with Apple Mail. I ought to know, I have a half dozen email accounts with various places, including my very first email address with aol which is now my dedicated "I really want this newsletter/ad/notification so it's not spam, but I don't want it in my personal mailbox" address. And of all my addresses, it is the one that has never given me any grief when attempting to read it in Mail OR on the web. And the web interface allows you to sort your email in all kinds of ways, unlike gmail which blows at that. It's just not a "cool" email address is all.

I tried, but unless you have the url of the exchange server, it can't be set up as an Exhange email account.

This kills me. Some clients don't end up deleting items properly even though I've tried to configure the settings as suggested by Google. Wait, found a link that might finally let me delete on this mobile without archiving the darn email. I'll report back.

Not that I would ever consider Microsoft as a potential e-mail provider, but... yup.

I can't remember, were you a Fastmail user? I'm looking for an email provider where I can use my own domain and have proper IMAP access to my mail. Does your provider offer such service?

as long as you're not a stickler for deleting instead of archiving, gmail works perfectly fine.

Fastmail.fm is your solution. I use it with my own domain and have proper imap acess to my mail. There are a couple of ways to configure the domain but in my case, I just use domain forwarding. My domain name registrar forwards all mail sent to my domain to my fastmail email address. There is a way to do it without forwarding but I can't remember off the top of my head. forwarding works nicely for me overall. The only issues I've had haven't been due to fastmail. They've been due to the domain name registrar. All quickly resolved.

This is generated automatically when you add the exchange account to iOS.

The settings didn't work in MacOS 10.8

So, it looks like in iOS, your options for Outlook are either exchange or POP (if you set it up via the Hotmail icon in iOS Mail, Calendars, Contacts) whereas in desktop your options are POP only.

In terms of Gmail, your iOS options are exchange, IMAP or POP but your desktop options are IMAP or POP.

Summary: Neither one can do exchange via the desktop and Gmail gives you added IMAP functionality in both iOS and desktop.

I'm confused!
