Hi,

Does anybody know what the heck "Other" is in Mac OS X Lion/Mountain Lion when you drill down through the About this Mac dialog as described in my Subject line?

My separate media hard disk has 112GB of "Other" which is not included in the Music, Movies or Photos which are the only things I thought I had on this hard drive.

Very weird.

My "other" is 74 GB. It is primarily Mail, Documents, software dogs, and everything that doesn't fit in the named categories, plus the OS. This is about right in my case.

If you can get within 10 GB by using Get Info on folders, that's close enough.

If you really want to know, use OmniDiskSweeper (free) to list the contents by size.

BTW, that bar chart has been known to be miles off, but it was supposedly fixed. Not something I'd spend time worrying about.

But if all I'm supposed to have on my media drive is media, I can't figure out what else is taking up 112GB of space. If that was on my boot drive, I'd say okay. But on my media drive, it doesn't make sense.

Thanks for the mention of OmniDiskSweeper. Turns out those are my mobile apps using 112GB of space. For some reason, the About this Mac shows "apps" as zero and "other" as 112GB. Weird.
