Time Machine or a clone or both. It's fast and easy to set up. There's no excuse not to have backups.

Not if he was locked out of his computer.

I just had the unfortunate experience of buying a stolen mbp on ebay (stf) and was confronted with that password screen. There is NO WAY around that. In fact, I was confronted with that screen AFTER I had already upgraded the hard drive and memory.

This is not just a case of not backing up, this is a serous indictment of 'the cloud'

Where did this come from?

I went into my Preferences and found iCloudPref (10.7.4) which asked for me to log in with my Apple ID and password, which I did.

There was no screen like the image you showed, so I just unchecked everything, including Documents, which had a warning about losing anything on iCloud. Since I've never used iCloud and don't intend to, I unchecked it.

Where was that graphic you posted?

Was there another step?

Someday, am I going to be sorry for doing this?

Not if he was locked out of his computer.

While the user will not know the passcode to unlock the computer, the "Genius" at the Apple Store has tools to unlock it.

That screen is also on ML Macs.

I just don't understand. If he has a backup like TM or CCC, he can just rebuild his data on either a new Mac or on his MBA once he's no longer locked out.

The fool states he doesn't back up.

He also says Apple was scammed, or at least fooled, into giving the hacker access. Something similar happened to me with my credit card company. They gave access to my account by being fooled by the scammer. And my credit card company freely admitted it. Fortunately I check my account almost daily so I caught it right away.

I would guess most people do not back up their iOS devices. Most of the content can sync either to iCloud, Dropbox, email, or other services seems to make people even more lackadaisical when it comes to backup.
