Anyone Use Zoho Mail?
Posted by: mrlynn

Following on this thread,

[forums.macresource.com]

I finally found time to start looking at alternatives to Apple's iCloud Mail. Fastmail is often suggested here, but I found another that looks newer: Zoho Mail, here:

Anyone using this? Comparisons to Fastmail, and other services?

Thanks, but I'd prefer to stay out of Google's clutches.

I also recently "re-discovered" Zoho when I too was looking into this whole email business. Apparently I had created an account long ago, but didn't remember.

Anyway, it looks good, but which account were you thinking of getting? The free business Lite? Or the free personal?

It looks like the business Lite has push (which may or may not be important to you). I"m not sure if the personal has push. Also, it's hard to tell if the Lite forces you to have to use your own domain or if it gives you an option to just have an @zoho.com address like the free personal does.

The Lite gives you 5GB which is WAY more than the free fastmail option, so if you're looking to keep things free, that's something to consider.

I think if you want to avoid Google then either Fastmail or Zoho are probably a couple of your best options.

Fastmail, by the way, does NOT have push.

Just discovered Zoho, so haven't really thought about the options. Their Business 'Lite' (free) service says,

Quote

Host 1 domain only*

Maximum 3 Users
Manage 3 Groups
5GB Mail Storage /User
Push Mail, Mobile Sync
Email Support only

* You must own a domain to proceed with email hosting.

That includes 5 GB of space. I can't find a description of their 'free personal [non-business] account', but I think it includes the 5 GB of free space.

I think I'd want 'push' in order to keep my two Macs in sync.

No one here using Zoho?

Wouldn't "pull" IMAP work just as well?

MrLyn,

Thanks for the link. It seems Zoho offers much much more than just email! Definitely checking it out, just because some of the other apps seem nifty!

Looks like the "Free Personal Account" has unlimited email space (!), but has limits on the volume of email you can send or receive in a single day:

[forums.zoho.com]

Quote

Please find below the current restrictions in usage for free personal users, who have unlimited mail storage space.

Incoming Mail size : 300MB/Day (Including Attachments).
Outgoing Mail size : 200MB/Day (Including Attachments)
Number of recipients / mail : 50
Outgoing Mail count : 250 emails/Day
Bounce Mail count : 10 emails/Day

My impression is that personal accounts give you a ' ____@zoho.com' address; if you want your own domain name, you need the free business account (which has a size limit of 5 GB). I think both support IMAP or POP. With IMAP you can sync among computers/devices. It's not clear to me how this is different from a 'push' function.

Robert M, it does appear that Zoho has a lot of web-based business apps that could be useful, e.g. 'CRM' (Customer Relationship Management) and Project Management. I'm thinking of trying a personal account just to test the service, and then maybe moving my domain over there.

They seem platform-agnostic, and reasonably Mac-friendly. It's surprising to me that folks here don't know about it.

You can manage without push. IMAP is fine.

Before Apple started talking about 'push', everyone said, "get IMAP."

Can you explain the difference?

UPDATE:

I used the Contact form on Zoho's website to ask about the specifics of the Free Personal accounts, and about the domain requirement for the Free Business accounts. Here's the response:

Quote

Hello!

Thanks for contacting support.

For free personal users 'username@zoho.com', maximum space allocated at free is 5 GB, if you wish to have more storage space than this limit, you can purchase additional storage space (you can purchase upto 200 GB).

Yes, to have a free business account with Zoho 'username@domain.com' you need to have domain name. If you already own a domain, you can get domain based email address in Zoho easily, refer the link Adminconsole help page.

If you do not own a domain, you can buy the same through the link Buy Domain (access this link by signing into your Zoho Mail account) and create a domain based address.

Sincerely,
Kailash

This is different from the scheme I copied above, with unlimited space but daily traffic limits, but maybe that has changed. I'll ask.

Just to clarify, I would think RIM with the Blackberry helped popularize push rather than Apple.

When it comes to receiving email, "push" email gets transferred to your device as the server receives it (assuming the device is powered on and has a data connection). "Pull" email arrives in your inbox after your mail client checks for new mail. If you tell the traditional email client to poll often enough (15 minutes might be the shortest automatic interval), you probably won't notice the difference.

Granted, push and pull methods (assuming you meant IMAP when it comes to pull) will also sync your read messages, deleted messages, and any similar email changes between devices. In theory, push will synchronize all powered on and data connected devices instantly when a change is made whereas pull will require you to hit "sync" manually. Manually as in the email client is set to automatically seek these changes on a set schedule or when you literally interact with the client.

Not to confuse you (let's be honest, I'm a novice myself when it comes to the nuts and bolts of email), but push email can work over the IMAP protocol as well. However, many services, such as Exchange (EAS) and Blackberry, use different protocols to "push" email. Unless iOS 6 has a new trick up its sleeve, the iOS email client doesn't support push via IMAP at this time. Very unfortunate really. Your Mac Mail.app client does support IMAP push so not all is lost.

Good link with a nutshell of the problem with IMAP and push support on iOS:
"If your email needs are limited to iCloud, Yahoo or Microsoft Exchange accounts, lucky you -- the rest of us have had to turn to third-party apps to be alerted to incoming missives from our peers. Admittedly, this is a first-world problem, given that we can simply tweak our device to automatically check for incoming email every 15 minutes, but that’s not really the point.

On Mac OS X, Apple’s Mail.app uses technology known as IMAP IDLE to poll for incoming email. It’s not perfect, but it generally works just fine. All we’re asking for is the same thing on our iOS devices -- particularly the iPhone and iPad, which are capable of an always-on data connection.
"

What the link doesn't mention is that MobileMe/iCloud push doesn't really update on iOS properly either. Exchange accounts do update so MobileMe/iCloud is just being weird (not surprisingly). Unlike the other push email notifications schemes supported by iOS, the unread messages badge doesn't update properly on iOS when it comes to iCloud. My understanding is the badge will update when new email comes in via iCloud, but not when the mail has been marked as read on another device. The badge simply won't update until new messages arrive via iCloud or you manually open the mail app on the iOS device. Yet, your Mac will update properly via push if you work the other direction, i.e. changes made on iOS and then you switch over to the Mac later.

Here's more info on that problem:
"Sync but not Pushed. I.E. You have to OPEN the Mail App on your iOS Device for things like this to Sync. iCloud (like MM) only Pushes New Mail to your iOS Device. So if you are working at your Mac and you have read all of your email the RED BADGE on your iOS devices still show that you have mail to read. But once you OPEN the Mail Client it Sync's Properly."

Edit: Click the "View Entire Thread:" link to read a fascinating discussion on the problem. The last post in the thread is particularly interesting.

Bottom line, do you need push? Probably not if you are using IMAP because even if the email client or service doesn't support push (whether it be IMAP IDLE, EAS, or whatever the heck iCloud is doing on iOS), your mail will still be able to stay in sync. At worst, you can generally set the email to check automatically every 15 minutes anyway. Or if you are really intent on getting your email immediately, you could keep manually clicking the fetch email button. winking smiley

Silvarios—Many thanks for the extended discourse. I meant to reply, but got waylaid, and wanted to explore the links a bit. There are a good deal more ins and outs to plain ol' email than I imagined. More anon.

Haven't heard back from Zoho, BTW.
