blah. beware of coppertone sunscreen

I used coppertone for years but haven't for the past few. I spent the last week camping on the coast and picked up some coppertone sunscreen for the last couple days. Apparently sometime recently they added a new ingredient which, for many, turns orange with sweat and stains your clothes. We've washed a few things with stain remover ( pre soaked) multiple times and the stains don't come out. It's probably stained a couple hundred bucks of stuff.

You have a lot of iron in your water, don't you? The orange stains are a chemical reaction between a certain sunscreen ingredient and the iron in your water. That's why they don't show up until after you wash the item. The culprit is avobenzone (aka Parsol 1789). It is an oxidizer, and it oxidizes the iron in your water. So the stains are basically rust. You never had this problem before because avobenzone just started showing up in run-of-the-mill sunscreens in the last year or two. Water temp, detergent type, etc. don't matter. It's all about the iron in your water.

As for the stains, they'll probably be a challenge to remove. Find a rust remover that's safe for the fabric, and use that. I've had good luck with a product called Magica...

That's a lot of pesto.

There's also a warning about this stuff being flammable. I saw one report of a consumer using it, then cooking on a BBQ. He was rushed to the hospital with multiple burns.

I know first hand this stuff collects at the bottom your shower/bathtub - making it very slippery.

Which Coopertone? We have always used the Sports lotion in the blue tube.

West San Gabriel Valley, California ... for the time being :-)

I used a tube of that for the first time yesterday - guess I'll have to wait and see what happens. We have a water softener installed in our home, so maybe it'll be OK.

RIP, Greg the DogSitter. You are missed.

All this occurred before washing the clothes. The showers I had been in were well water, so I probably had lot of iron on my skin that was released with sweat. I'll look into Magica.

I have usually used the sports stuff in the blue bottles. This time it was a spray because, camping, my hands were usually dirty and often had a lot of sand on them. So it was easier to spray. I still have sections of my legs that I've scrubbed a half dozen times and can't get it off.
