Question for all you SSD experts

Newegg has a 'shell shocker' deal this morning that looks pretty good, but I'm not up on the latest SSD buzz...

I have both a Mac mini and a MBPro that have had WD Caviar Black drives fail in recent weeks, both while still under warranty btw, and I'm wondering if it's time to throw SSDs in both of them. What do you all recommend?

As I say, I've not been able to keep up on the latest info regarding SSDs, but I know a bunch of you have been jumping on the bandwagon in recent months. What's the deal with MLC vs SLC anymore? Not that big a deal? Are there brands & sizes that are proving to be more reliable than others?

Thanks for any and all info you're willing to share!!

No regrets here, best improvement I have made in my aging MacPro, feels like a new machine and expect to get a few more years out of it on that basis. I went with a unit from our sponsor and for a few more bucks I sleep good nights knowing of the support I will get if needed. Also got a model with five year warranty given unproven reliability, worth it to me, others may choose absolute lowest price as their choice.

I too went with the OWC model. Not much more expensive than the deal on Newegg.

That Kingston ssd doesn't seem like that great a deal to me. Crucial m4 and Samsung 256Gb drives go for less and have a better reputation.

OWC sells terrific SSDs with great customer support.

If I were to recommend someone to get their first ssd, I'd go owc.

Thanks guys. Still pretty pricey, aren't they? Wish I could afford the 960GB model!

I installed a 256 GB Crucial SSD in my late 2009 Mac Mini in June and posted about it here. The SSD holds my OS and my applications. All of my music, photos and important data reside on an external drive and both drives are backed up to another external drive daily.

My Mac's performance has shown marked improvement, especially when waking from sleep, booting up and launching programs.

Small SSD boot drive and large HDD file storage is relative Nirvana until prices come way down onlarger volumes. In terms of day to day operations, I would look at reliability via Amazon or Newegg reviews, but otherwise you're probably not going to notice other distinctions e.g. controller chip, max throughput, etc.

My total drive usage is under 50GB, so I got a 128GB Corsair for WinXP and a 128GB Mushkin for OSX. Wonderful to have faster boots.

Need another 128GB SSD for my OSX backup to make the speed better overall, and for the redundancy, too.

Put a 90GB Kingston in my wife's Dell laptop running WinXP, and it made the most dramatic difference of all. Not a bit sorry about making the change. Temps have dropped in all machines as well.

What it is, man, a low-down and funky feelin'

Keep watching the sales. I bought a 512GB Crucial SSD two weeks ago for $339.

john-o, here's a Crucial m4 6GB/S 256GB SSD from B&H for $199.99 with free shipping. I'm using it with good success in this MBP now.
