I saw a bit of Costas (I can't stand him, either) last night, and thought we'd finally found Waldo.

the outrageous dark hair I saw the other day (no gray temples) compared to just a few weeks ago looks RIDICULOUS!!

It’s like looking at McCartney in the mid 80s… already salt and pepper, at just 42 years old, and now at
70, he has had some surgery and colors his hair continuously.

And I like both of these guys — Costas calling baseball for a major playoff is almost a thing of beauty when
he’s partnered with the right person. He’s an encyclopedia, he loves the game, he’s a steady emotion compared
to the complimentary counterpart who would offer color commentary and emotion.

I like Bob Costas, although he is a motormouth. Anyone remember the late night interview show he had on NBC where he and the guest sat in big puffy chairs? I thought he was a better interviewer than most others.

I like the dry asides he slips in.

Cosmetically, he's certainly channeling Dick Clark's stylist and maybe his plastic surgeon, too. That's modern celebrity for you.

As for olympic coverage running over for 7 minutes, that is indeed a crime against humanity.eye rolling smiley

That guy was only ranting about how the NBC program was running late, which presumably meant he had to work later as a result. Which is a personal issue, not an indictment of Costa's performance as an Olympic host. In fact at the end the guy says he loves him as a broadcaster.

Not that I'm sticking up for Costa. I just think it's better when folks watch a video before discussing it.

Aren't they all motormouths?

I am so very glad for over-the-air digital TV when watching baseball, because when I switch to the "Spanish" audio track all I hear are the sounds of the ballpark.

I wish Costas would do any sport other than baseball. He completely ruins it for me. Sure, there are far worse and he is very knowledgable about the game. I just wish he'd come off a bit less like the guy that knows he knows something. He seems like the kid that never got enough credit and now as an adult he's out to prove something.

Admittedly I'm spoiled hearing Vin Scully (arguably the best announcer ever) do the Dodgers games. It's nice to hear him relay facts/stories/anecdotes in a way that doesn't sound like he's trying to be the smartest guy in the room.

What he said. Except that instead of "any sport other than baseball," I'd say "any event in which I would not be watching TV."

When I worked at a bookstore in St Louis, he'd come in with his kids, and he was just the nicest, down-to-earth guy: sweet to his kids, and indulgent with fans (who'd invariably try to top him in trivia -- imagine how tiresome that gets day after day).

I'm kinda thinking that when the Olympics coverage runs late it's not his fault. I'm guessing maybe NBC has, I dunno, a producer or something like that behind the scenes. I could be wrong, maybe Bob run the cameras, edits every segment, adds in all the commercials, and remotely administers the network satellites.

That's a lot of pesto.

Costas can be smug, but I'd take him over many, if not most of the Fox and ESPN crew, especially Joe Suck and Chris Berman. Lots seem to dislike McCarver as well, but I can tolerate him.

Yep, I watched it almost every night. That show solidified my opinion that Bob must do more background research about his interviewees that anyone else out there. His knowledge of everyone he interviewed seemed encyclopedic at the time and he drew information out of the people with ease. His 3-part interview with Ozzy was one of the best I've ever seen. Having the freedom to just extend the interview past the 30-minute time slot to a second or third day was a great aspect of the show. I miss it.

He had an interview with Bob Seger, the only time I've ever seen Seger on TV, that was great. It stands out in my memory.

I read an article in the Enquirer by a limo driver who gave his impressions of famous people he had driven for. He said he took Costas home one day in St. Louis and the Costas family were having a family reunion. Bob asked him to come in and fix himself a plate of food. He said "no thanks" but Bob insisted, telling him how good some of the dishes were, so he went in with Bob and had a good meal.

I really like Costas. Watching "Baseball" back in the 90's made me into a baseball fan (maybe not the most devoted, but still...). Influence like that makes me automatically consider him "one of the best". I think the reason he comes off as smug sometimes is that he is so knowledgable and confident. Of course, I also really liked Madden, who was knowledgeable and didn't so much come off that way. If you're like Costas you get criticized as smug, if you're like Madden you get criticized for acting like a dumbass. To me, the alternative is being bland. I think both seem(ed) sincere/unaffected, which I like. kj.

Costas is a first rate top grade sports announcer, he's an even better analist and interviewer. If the worst criticism he ever faces is that he took a few minutes from local hacks, he'll be fine.

That's good to know. I don't wish the guy any ill will (no pun intended)... I just don't want to watch him on television.

I grew up in L.A. and have been listening to Scully call Dodger games my entire life (nearly 50 years). This season I've watched WAY more Dodger games than I usually do, partially because I know our time with Vin is coming to an end soon. When he goes, it will be like losing a family member.

RIP, Greg the DogSitter. You are missed.

I'm not a fan of Costas, and I'm not sure why.

I think it's just something in his voice and its cadence that puts me off a bit. Those certainly aren't indicative of character flaws. I *do* like Madden, who, to me, comes off as kind of a goofball from time to time. Go figure.

I've seen the word smug attributed to people who have absolutely no such behavior when considering smugness a criticism using its most popular definition. I don't know if that applies to Costas, as I haven't watched him much.

That criticism as been leveled at Justin Long's portrayal of Mac, and I didn't see that at all. For me, the poster boy for Smugness as a Bad Thing is Bryant Gumbel. He was Mr. Affectation, with a degree in personification.

To be fair, I couldn't stand his voice even before I didn't like what he did with it.</fair>
