Very interesting analysis of the rumored iPhone 5 design

This gave me a new found respect for Apple designers, including Sir Jonny. Of course, only if all of this is true!

"This is could be one of four things

1. A very elaborate hoax. If it’s a hoax, kudos to whoever made it because it would require the same amount of design and engineering effort that would go into an actual smartphone. Not to mention all of the collaboration that would have been needed between the numerous different sites that have posted images and video already. That’s an insane amount of work for a laugh, so I don’t think it’s a hoax.

2. A decoy made by Apple to throw everyone off the scent and root out leaks. Now THAT would be amazing. I’m secretly rooting for this option if only because it would be so diabolically awesome.

3. An early model or sample of a design that Apple is working on. Maybe, but we have seen this same design pop up in too many places and it looks way too far along in development to be a model or early sample.

4. An actual production sample of the next iPhone. This is where I would put my money. I’m fairly convinced this is what the next iPhone will look like. If true, this design will be noteworthy for being the first unibody iPhone, making it the thinnest, strongest, and lightest housing to date."

If you could step outside of the arena, it's just a piece of metal/plastic sitting on a table. If it's got 4G and a bigger screen, then it's good to go.

They show ribs on the inside of the frame and labeled them 'toolpath'. I doubt that it is an unintentional leftover. Those look to be integral, intentional features. They left the ribs to provide rigidity I'd bet. Otherwise, it would be machined flat.I guess it could also be that this is a prototype that is rough machined. Looks convincing to me.

Will this make replacing a busted screen easier or harder. Just talked to my "not techie" close friend and she just replaced here iPhone 4 screen all by herself. Ditching the glass back is a great step, but I still want to be able to at least attempt self service.

It should make it easier to replace the screen, because it's the last thing put on and the first thing to remove. It was just the opposite in the current version of the iPhone.

Don't you need to know what bar this model came from before deciding whether it is authentic?

I'm actually surprised Apple doesn't do this on purpose, but on the same token, I imagine it'd be difficult for them to make something that wouldn't include elements of what they were actually making, if you follow me.

What they ought to do is take a Samsung Galaxy whatever and put it in a case that has "prototype x0484ls" stenciled on it and leave it at a bar where the guys from Gizmodo drink.

(A note before we get started: These images are of components of what is rumored to be the next iPhone, not of an official Apple-assembled iPhone. To that end, it’s almost like putting together a T-Rex skeleton. We can be pretty sure that T-Rex had tiny arms and a long tail, but I suppose it’s also possible we attached the tail incorrectly and really it’s a unicorn horn. Same thing applies here. It’s possible, for example, the screen isn’t flush with the steel, but we can take an educated guess that it probably will be. Maybe the headphone jack is a kaleidoscope on this iPhone. We can speculate. Okay, carry on.)

<WHEW!>

That's a relief!

I saw that and thought "There's no way in Hell that thing came from Apple. I'll bet even they're prototypes look better than that.

if you follow me.

And I do.

To add some "new" features to make the decoy seem real could be a double-edged sword. What happens when those features don't show up and potential buyers are disappointed? And other than spoiling the surprise, how effective would that be?

That would be great! Put it in a third party Apple case and leave it!
