I bought one of those self propelled wheeled cutters, that would not work at all. I should have taken my neighbors advice, and not bought the one with two wheels, as he says they are terrible. He says the older ones with one wheel work fine.

But he and I cant find the one wheelers.

I had one of those WORX edgers, although it wouldnt cut through the edge grass very well, It did the job, and was easier as, you had no cord.

Any suggestions as what to use to edge lawn.

I don't edge my lawn, but at my moms I use a short D-handle spade to cut back along the walk and establish an edge. Once you do that it is easier to use one of the other tools for maintenance.

A lot of our grass is edged with brick or paving but where the lawn goes straight to the flower bed I use something like this.

When the little sidewalk between my driveway and front door starts getting narrow I cut off all the overhang with a square point spade



My nephew cuts the lawn.
I've tried to convince him that the tall pieces of grass at the edges and at the base of the pole and light post are great hunting spots for spiders and crickets and what not and he should just leave them

but he seems to like the smell of his little gas weed whacker so the crickets and spiders will just have to get by without.

I use an old string trimmer for the lawn at my Mom's house. Tilt it vertical and it works pretty well. My Dad bought a cheaper version of what Rhonda has, but I rarely use it because it needs a lot of effort.

Another string trimmer user here, even though the instructions explicitly say not to use it that way. Screw it, I'm not falling for their money grab. And I leave my glasses on for protection.

String trimmer, have an old Black and Decker Grass Hog. The trimmer head rotates and there's a metal guide that you use to run along the driveway or sidewalk. Works great.

Ryobi edger attachment for a gas Powerhead. But do Not buy the new version. Stf for my hilarious story of returning said attachment while still dripping blood from its epic catastrophic failure. Hint.. Safety glasses are not just for work !!

Double ditto. But to be honest, I pay a service to do my lawn (allergies) but the first time before it gets mowed I use one of these to do the edging, and it stays pretty clean throughout the season (especially this year, when the grass barely grows because of the drought). FWIW, it's kind of a large corner lot with a lot of sidewalk -- so holding that weed eater sideways doesn't do the trick for that whole run.
