Why can't Apple IDs be combined?

I somehow ended up with two Apple IDs. Some of my gear is registered with one ID, some with the other. I'd love to have the stuff listed all in one place, but apparently it can't be done. Why do you suppose it's not an option, when the two accounts clearly belong to the same person?

When I got the family iPhones last December I discovered I couldn't register the iPhones using my Apple ID because my username was a "handle", and it had to be an email address now. No problem, I just changed my username to the appropriate form. Only now the apps registered under my "handle" won't update with my email username.

try to decide which account you want to keep, there register the "other" stuff in there, what could go wrong? just copy/paste serial numbers from the old account, you may need a different browser to keep the old account open to see SN.

Several years ago apple switched the itunes ID and the apple store id in some way, and so at least for me (and for lots of folks complaining online) that meant that we had two itunes accounts. I had purchased itunes songs using the old account, and they were DRM protected, but I could no longer log in to that account, since apple had switched me and everyone else to the new form for their account. I can't remember all the details. In any case, I called apple support and they said they couldn't combine them and didn't offer any help really. However, I did in the end sign up for itunes match (using my "new" account) and that matched all the old stuff too, and I was able to download the unprotected version and update all those songs. I will cancel itunes match for the next year.

So, if this is possibly what happened to you, and by "apple ids" you mean itunes ids, then that could be a possible solution. At the time, I was unable to tell if itunes match worked for others though.

yeah having similar issues after moving to iCloud from a Mobile.me Family Account with all 5 of the accounts in use.... most with 3 or more Aliases linked to them as well...

Been a real pain in the butt.

Do you mean I should delete one account and then try to list those devices in the remaining account?

no, you don't have to delete account 2. just go into account 1 and use the "register" link to add new devices, i.e. those listed in Account 2. I would assume those will eventually disappear from account 2. I did that with my wife's MBP, now it shows up in my account (I did that when I activated her AppleCare). I didn't bother to check to see if it's still listed under her account.

I tried that earlier today, and it didn't work: a message popped up stating that I couldn't register the device in question because it was registered to a different ID.

then de-register it from Account 2 first?

That worked. Finally have everything in one place.

LOTS of people have multiple accounts for a variety of reasons, often because of how Apple changed things around over the years. It IS a real pain in the neck. Apple:

I told this story previously, but one thing that baffles/irritates me about this is that Apple merged my IDs years ago -- so I know they can do it. I had one for iTunes and one for everything-else-Apple and when I was on the phone about something the confusion came up and the csr asked me, "Wouldn't it be easier if I just merged those two accounts into one? Which account do you want me to use?" Boom done, before I was even off the phone. So now ten years later they "can't" do that?
