IMac died

Strange afternoon. 20" core 2 duo 2.16. It's been running thru a battery backup it's entire life and I can count on one hand how many times it's ever actually needed to operate on the battery. APC 1250.
Working on it today and the APC unit buzzed for about twenty seconds and then the alarm sounded stating the battery needed to be replaced. I powered down and reset the APC unit. Powered up and now says the battery is fine.

The iMac does nothing. I tried every sort of reset pulling the power cord, counting to fifteen, holding down the power button in a few diff ways, trading out the power cable and eve trying other outlets in the house. No response.
Pulled the RAM. Tried all the reset power up suggestions on line and still nothing. There was a green LED visible thru the underside but after a few power up attempts this went away.

I cracked the case and pulled the hard drive. Guess I'll drop this drive in an external case and pick up a Mac mini. (and offer this iMac up for parts).

Thanks for being a great sounding board and letting me yack,
Rain

I assume you tried an SMC reset too, given all of the trouble shooting you've already done.

This is a Mac, try all methods of resuscitation. Get the doctor STAT! Whatever that means, I have never heard an actual doctor say that.

How could a smc reset be done when the computer wont power up? SMC is when you hold down a combo of keys and restart, right?

I think on that mac unplugging everything and holding power button down for a certain amount of time does the job?

The SMC is powered by the PRAM battery, it's what turns on the power supply when the on/off button is pressed.

More info and the procedure is in this document.

Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

I got the unplugging right :-)
Howzabout that ancient trick of putting PRAM battery in backwards...

No, there's an old trick of putting them in intentionally the wrong way for a few seconds to =really= zap the PRAM.

Ah, didn't know that trick. Haha. It was a white 2006 /2007 model. I imagine I'd see a speed increase going with something newer. Is the best bang the latest non SuperDrive $599 or head to eBay and find a slightly used one?

Best bet is a refurb, although currently only the $799 model is in the store at $699.. The stinkers hold their value used to the point that recent used ones are not going to be far off full retail.
Unfortunately an i5 with only 2 GB of RAM and an HDD is going to be beachball city. I'd keep it at 2 GB and SSD it personally. You can keep your media and documents on your "new" external.

Mine is still working -got the same iMac. Sorry that yours has given up the ghost. However, this little machine that could is getting slower with my everyday tasks and definitely shows its age with Parallels. I'm trying to make it hang on for a little while longer...

I also have that Mac and it's getting slower with age. (it would be like we were aging together but it's moving to the dust heap a bit faster than I'd like to travel). Seems I'm destined to outlast yet another Mac and OS, just spare me the Lion experience.

Is anything salvagable off it for parts? I assume the superdrive and the RAM at least.
