Nice sensational headline to get people all hot and bothered...

Quote

Missy's owner, 29-year-old Anthony Joseph Ortolani, told media that he was forced to leave Missy behind Aug. 5 when a storm moved in and he became worried for the safety of a younger hiker who was with him. He said Missy's feet were cut from walking on sharp rocks and she could no longer walk.

So he's being charged with animal cruelty for choosing his life and the life of a fellow hiker, over that of the dog.

One wonders how people would feel if he left the young hiker on the mountain to carry his dog down instead? Would that be perfectly fine?

Maybe you missed this part, no attempt to go back for the dog at any time after leaving the mountain.

Clear Creek County Sheriff's Sgt. Rick Safe said "the dog was basically abandoned up there."

"He [Ortolani] made no initial attempt. After three days, he thought the dog was deceased so he made no attempts to reclaim the dog," Page said.

No.. didn't miss it. Didn't say he was a stellar human being.
But wouldn't you agree that the knee jerk reaction in the "hang him!" direction might just be a wee bit overboard?
He made a choice between a human and a dog.

Paul,
From my understanding of the article: No one objected to his priority of taking care of the younger hiking companion first. But what was the reason he could not summon assistance with rescuing the dog after he and his friend got home safely? Now that the dog has been rescued and nurtured back to health, he realized his "mistake" and wants her back after 8 + days?!! The only reason he does so because he cannot handle the wrath of the community and a possible jail time. He will be better off not having a companion animal if it poses such an inconvenience now. If I am missing something pls point it out.

The guy is guilty of cruelty in my mind not for leaving the dog up there - at that point, it's an obvious choice between a human and a dog - no contest, but just bringing a dog on such a trip is cruel.

How would you fair climbing over granite for miles without boots on? I see this ALL THE TIME hiking in the mountains. Very few dogs can handle hiking over rock for very long. The heavier the dog, the more likely they will stop moving altogether after about five miles.

Gee, why would a reader want to know how they knew who the dog's owner was? Sloppy.

PETA forced them to run with that headline.
