My guess for First Place was actually Second Place.

You guessed 1998 Honda Civic? How did you know 1998 was the "hot" year?

I thought the Civic was a lock for First, a little luck on the year, but '98 has been a popular victim for a few years here in the SF/Oakland Bay Area.

civic would have been my first guess, camry second and pick up trucks third

no specific model years, just seems those models come up in the top spots year after year after year

Any car that isn't 'chipped' or easily spoofed, and has actually survived that long. I expect stealing cars is a lot harder now than it used to be... the old 'spark a few wires together' is replaced with 'bring a new computer module'..

I don't put much stock in the year and model of most stolen car. What is so valuable about a 14 year old car that is barely worth a couple of thousands? It is just chance.

No, it's not chance. You'll notice the newest car on the list is almost 7 years old, the oldest is over 20. Cars in this range are the ones that need repair, and those parts can be hard to come by.

There's a nice simple explanation right in the opening paragraphs of the linked article, if interested.

Having trouble believing a 1991 Toyota Camry is the fourth most stolen car. That was the last year before the redesign; a friend of mine had a 91 and I had a 92 years ago so I know what they look like.

There just aren't that many of them on the street for it to be the fourth most stolen car.

We are all trying to justify that the most stolen car is the most desirable car. I don't think it works that way. I tend to believe that most thefts occur in low income neighborhoods hence the propensity of older cars.

and the camry and civiic are cars their makers like to tout their longevity with sales slogans like 90% of xxx are still on the road today

there has to be enough of them out there to support a (semi-) black market for parts along-side legitimate supplies

I got the make and model. I didn't even think to guess the year. The Accord is always high on the list, so I was just playing the odds.

1. I can attest to the number one status; had one, it was stolen (but recovered undamaged.)

2. They're not being stolen for their resale value! slap smiley They're being stolen to be driven! Hence number one is the one that's really easy to steal.

Maybe it's the same couple of vehicles that are continually being stolen and re-stolen!

Rankings mean little without a Test of Significance. This is the test that can quantify if the number one status may have been achieved by chance.

Which forum are yoou reading? Who is justifying that besides you?

The article basically opens with:

“It’s transportation. It’s for the parts,” NICB spokesman Frank Scafidi said. “It’s to commit some other crime. Or it’s just to get on the other side of town when you can’t figure out a bus schedule.”

“[The models on the list] are more numerous,” Scafidi said. “They have been around a lot longer and they are easier to steal.”

Seriously, how did you get this way?

I think you're overcomplicating this.

If it's numerically the most, that's all there is to it. It's just a raw count.

you are assuming it is different cars being stolen each time. My neighbor kid has had his Honda stolen 4 times in 6 months. It is usually taken for joyrides and gets dumped somewhere a day or two later.

I often leave the oldest Volvo parked with widows open and keys in the ignition in bad neighborhoods -- no takers.
