Is there a way to run Skype on a new iPad (v. 3) using the FaceTime camera, etc.?

What it is, man, a low-down and funky feelin'

Yes. Download skype from the app store.

It works, though when we used it, the person on the other side said it dropped frames and froze a lot more than using Skype on an older MacBook Pro.

Works fine for me. No dropped 'frames.'. Those might be due to a slow connection.

Assuming Lew had both connected to the same Internet connection, wouldn't that be odd?

No, because that would simply mean his network couldn't handle two Skype streams.

It was to the same person and the 2 sessions were within a minute of each other on the same network. My assumption was that the app on the iPad was doing something wrong but it was bad enough that I haven't been tempted to try it again yet. I should, as the convenience and runtime of the iPad runs rings around an older MacBook Pro. Yes, we do 2.5 hour Skype sessions with family pretty regularly.

Edit: the sessions were not at the same time, 1 followed the other.

Works very well indeed. I have an iPad 2, and it works great.

Bandwidth (the quality of your or your recipient's internet connection) is what determines poor or good performance, not current iPad hardware or the software.

The only less-than-optimal performance I've had using Skype on an iPad, videoconferencing from Seattle to Hong Kong, have been connection-quality related. I get somewhat better video quality on my stationary mac, connected directly (wired) via ethernet to our cable internet.

But our home's WiFi strength is pretty good, so performance on portables (iPhone, iPad) is quite satisfactory, too.

That's clearly not 100% true, the webcam will play a role in the quality of the video. As would computing power. Also, different versions of Skype are clearly better than others.

How would someone using an iPad 3 and a MacBook Pro, nearly at the same time, on the same network, over the same network connection (WiFi) see such a difference in quality. Did the recipients download link suddenly get much better? Did Lew's upload suddenly get much better? Could have been a one off glitch, but it makes you wonder. Who knows, Maybe Lew has a hardware problem with the font facing camera?

Read some negative reviews of the latest Skype update for iOS. Does it really prompt you to upload your local contacts and then quit if you opt out?
