Not only did the brakes fail, but the harder he pushed down on them, the faster the car went.

Mandatory retesting for everyone 80 and up, every 2 years, seems reasonable to me. My dad used to joke about an elderly friend of his who would hit the curb every so often as he drove down the street. Kind of amusing until you think about what would happen if there was a bicyclist between him and the curb.

This is nothing compared to the carnage caused by young drivers.

I think mandatory written and driving tests every time you renew, regardless of age should be done. Just because you could drive at 18 doesn't mean you remember the laws and still have the skills at 80.

Mandatory retesting for everyone 80 65 and up, every 2 years

Every five years for ticket/collision free drivers 35 to 64, with written test. Every year from 16 to 24, two years 25 to 35.

Maximum of 5 years between renewals, no exception, with hefty renewal fees to pay for all this, and heftier fees for those who have moving violations or driving related arrests (DUI, reckless, etc).

Texting, phone, hand held electronic devices become moving violations so that points affect driving record. Other distracted driving tickets already do this.

Mandatory arrests for driving on suspended/revoked license, as is required in domestic violence cases.

Not a cure all, but it would be a start.

Oh, and bring back chain/road gangs. AFL-CIO would have fits, but screw 'em.

Got any stats on the number of centenarian drivers vs. the number of 16-24 year old drivers?

Most families have a 'take the car away' moment with elderly parents. It's a hard decision. A real pity that people had to suffer.

The other point that needs to be made is that our society is very car dependent. Elderly people without the ability to drive in most areas are 'shut ins'.. they are dependent on other people to take them places, bring them food, etc.. As a result, losing the ability to drive can result in a signifiant reduction in joy of living.

Last time I renewed my license it was for 15 years. Ridiculous! And I loved doing it. Stay outta my way!

A trip to the DMV in California is a treat. If you don't make an appointment you will be spending a good part of the day there.
A normal license is for a max 5 years and is usually renewed by mail without tests. This is subject to your driving record.

Added to the mix are the budget problems of the state, 13 million cars (2004), 22,657,288 registered drivers (2004) and no vehicle inspections except for smog. Imagine what renewing every year would be like.

My mom reported her father-in-law b/c he kept getting his license even though he could barely see. I guess he was gaming the system somehow or just slipping through the cracks.

Maybe he just wanted to keep voting.

What states require a driver's license to vote?
