Playing in golf outing - simple advice
Posted by: evilrobot
Date: August 30, 2012 05:16PM
I'll be playing in a vendors golf outing. It was heavily emphasized that any all abilities are welcomed. (Haven't touched a club in 20 years, but did play regularly in high school/college.)

As it's fine to not have the playing skills, what 'gear' should I absolutely be bringing with me to need my hand held when I show up to the course?

Borrow some clubs?
Shoes?
Balls?

You definitely need balls to play golf for the first time in 20 years.

You can go light on the clubs with a driver (1-wood), a 3-wood, and 3,5,7,9 irons, and a putter. You might add a pitching wedge, but the 9-iron will do. All the other clubs will be in your way and not worth lugging around.

Shoes are not that important. In fact, did they outlaw cleats? I heard that somewhere. Borrow the clubs from someone who has an extra set. Don't borrow his best set. Buy 6 or 12 mid-priced balls. Get cheap used ones if you can find them. You'll need several tees for 18 holes. You'll need a towel.

As far as drinking, the rule is to pace yourself - a beer a hole.

You might be able to rent clubs at the pro shop but check in advance. As far as shoes go you can probably pick up a cheap pair at a discount online or even a big box. Also be aware that courses no longer allow steel @#$%&, These days soft @#$%& are required.

You should also compliment your hosts choice of golf hat by asking if it came with a free bowl of soup, followed by, but on you it looks good.

Also, if you are slicing or hooking, ask someone early on to help you stop it. They'll understand.

Q. How do you know if you're in the fairway?

A. If you have to ask, you're not.

After a 20 year lay off you may find that you are standing too close to the ball ...

... after you've hit it. wink smiley

Perhaps a shovel will do . . . 20 years of non-activity related golf will do that to ya!

Remember, anything that you hit and damage with a ball hit from the course is not your liability.

Edit: at least not in my state. I found this out at an alumni golf gathering (I have golfed three or four times) when I hooked a ball onto the back deck of a nice red Caddy convertible. When I went to the club house to report it, they told me I was not liable. I later looked it up and found that the courts had decided the person parked in the golf course lot assumed the risk because they should know that this happens at golf courses. By the same token, you may want to wear a helmet.

Wow, lots of responses and you're overlooking a big one!

GLOVES. Especially if you're hitting a bucket beforehand. Both hands preferably, but at least for your top hand. If you don't I guarantee you'll have blisters by tomorrow.
