mostly with Firefox and Chrome but now iMovie. occasional KPs but mostly just quitting apps. at first I thought it was Flash related but that is up to date and would not explain why iMovie is quitting.

MBP '09, 10.5.8, with 8gb RAM and hybrid drive.

do you have a spare external drive? i'd try a fresh os x install to see if its a corrupt drive or bad hardware

Run a RAM test. And/or try running with just one stick of RAM at a time trying both slots, to see if you can isolate a bad module or bad slot.
