Doctor my eyes! (distance running problems)

Over the past year I've take up running as a hobby. I LOVE it and have progressed from a 5K to a 10K to my first half marathon this coming weekend. The problem I'm running into is a by-product of the typical Alabama humidity...SWEAT. I keep getting sweat in my eyes. After a few miles, sweat starts collecting on my eye brows and lashes and then runs into my eyes, creating a pretty bad sting. I'm not comfortable carrying a small rag so that really isn't an option. I've thought about my shirt sleeves, but as I have begun to prefer running without sleeves, that is out as well.

Any runners on the forum with any ideas?

Wristband or just wipe the sweat away with your fingers frequently enough to keep it from running down. Or, goggles?

Sweatband. An old jockstrap waistband works well. Remove the other parts with a scissor.

Look up the "halo" sweatband. It works great, does not look too obnoxious. I use it when biking regularly.

Can't you just turn it around backwards in order to see?

Use it front-facing and cut eye holes, it'll be fine. Added bonus: anyone who sees you will give you a wide berth and not engage you in frivolous smalltalk.

Back when I was still running, I was lucky enough that I had a path with drinking fountains in two parks. On hot days I would splash my forehead/face about every 4 miles to cut the stinging.

in tha 510.

do you use some aftershave? make sure you don't spread any on you forehead. Also try to change the type of shampoo, basically anything that goes on your head or your face could end up in your eyes. change shampoo and aftershave to a different type, see if it gets better (or worse)

For occasional use just pull your shirt up from the bottom and wipe away the sweat.

B&L Soothe XP mineral oil eye drops are good at keeping the sting out for about 3-4 miles in 85 degrees in my experience.

Give it 5 minutes before you head out the door to avoid fuzzy eyesight.
