Some movies are worth watching every year and it's time to get in the mood. Here's my list of favorites.

Scrooged-Number one favorite!
Christmas in Connecticut-The 1945 version, classy, classy classy
The Bishops Wife-another classic
Christmas Story-Your Gonna Shoot Your Eye Out!
National Lampoon Christmas
Stealing Christmas-ok, it's a cheesy tv movie but I like it

Scrooged
A Christmas Story
Nat's Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Badder Santa (it is the unrated version)

And the original Grinch, of course.

Which ones would I stop doing what I was doing and watch?

Die Hard
Grinch
Nightmare Before Christmas

I've spent time watching many of the others but they don't keep me until the end. Especially MO34th. For some reason I just don't find anything compelling about that one.

Scrooged
Elf
The Grinch
A Christmas Story
It's a Wonderful Life
A Charlie Brown Christmas
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Year Without A Santa Claus (original, not the live one)*

==

* I always pictured a live version of this (some years ago, mind you) with:

John Lithgow as Santa
Geoffrey Rush as the Cold Miser
Jack Black as the Heat Miser
Betty White as Mrs. Claus

They've all got the pipes for the songs, IMO, especially Lithgow.

Scrooged

Last year we had a movie and beer night at a local theater. The local Brewery provided their beer for free and patrons sat and watched 'Scrooged' whilst quaffing beer. Ticket sales raised money for a local arts organization. It was VERY successful.

here's another old, obscure one:

Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory

Narrated by Truman Capote himself, this Emmy award-winning television version of Capote's "A Christmas Memory" is a faithful recreation of his wonderful short story (first published in Mademoiselle in 1956, later published in book form).

It appeared on ABC Stage 67 in December of 1966. Starring Geraldine Page as Sook and Donnie Melvin as Buddy. Adapted for television by Capote and Eleanor Perry. Directed by Frank Perry.

my VHS copy is black & white, but there exists a color print (according to Amazon reviews). i've since captured to DVDR, but the quality is so-so.

The Ref, with Kevin Spacey, Denis Leary, and Judy Davis at their funniest.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I specifically thought of it and didn't post as I didn't want to bring up bad memories for the forum on it's birthday.

C3PO was *very* shiny on that special.

Must be me but I've never seen the attraction of Christmas Story.

That one was a perennial for holiday movie time in grade schools in Alabama when I was growing up, since Truman Capote is from the state, and the story/movie are set there.

Pleasant enough tale, but quite frankly, a little of Capote's voice-over goes a lonnnng way...

Just the opposite for me. I've watched Polar Express twice trying to figure what I missed the first time,
still didn't see what the big deal was.

I left one off my list:
"Silent Night" with Linda Hamilton, fact based.

I made a mistake. Instead of the 1969 animated "A Christmas Carol". I should have listed the visually superior, more faithful, and less cutesy 1971 animated "A Christmas Carol" directed by Richard Williams and produced by Chuck Jones.

Cast Away with Tom Hanks. But almost any movie that is set in a warm place will do.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.
