Anyone built DIY stereo speaker stands?

I need a couple of 40" stands for my Klipsch THX or Swans M10 computer speakers. Of course, like everything I do, I immediately think of using 2X4s or 4X4s and 2X12s for the base and top. Or, maybe PVC for the stalks. I would like a way to hide the speaker cord going from the floor up to the speakers. I don't have any woodworking tools except a circular saw. I might paint it or if it's all wood, maybe stain it. Very few people will see them. Any suggestions?

Have you checked Monoprice? They might not cost much more than what you'd pay for DIY materials.

simple boxes of plywood or 1/2 inch board
could just have two or three sides

even simpler:

This looks doable:

Although I'd probably substitute 4x4 for the vertical portions, unless the threaded rod is easy to find and cheap.

I might avoid wood, just because you might be asking for resonance issues (especially if it's a box). The pvc pipe thing might work. You could fill the pipe itself with sand to deaden it. I've used threaded steel pipe with these:

for similar things (shelving, etc.). It's easy, strong, but a little spendy. kj.

Be sure to update us as you do this. Could be a good, fun project and not that difficult. Good Luck!

Not bad, but you need to figure in the cost of eventually upgrading to copper...

I think I've seen these flanges in Schedule 80 PVC or something like that. It's a shiny and clean dark gray plastic that is not bad looking. I think the pipes are threaded, if I can get the right lengths. A stained or painted 2 X 12 pine slab on the top and bottom would look good enough for me. But, I don't know how to get the cord into and out of the pipe. I don't have a router, which would fix the bottom.

You might be able to use a saw to make a v-notch in the back of the pipe, if I'm understanding what you mean. Or a "channel" in the wood underneath the fitting, so you can feed the wire through. kj.

If I use the Schedule 80 PVC, I can just drill holes at the top and bottom of the pipe.

There you go. You've got me feeling envious. Have fun! kj.
