The difference between Summer and Winter
Posted by: DP

I am taking pictures during the yearly changes and will make a cinemagraph (as Russell Brown names what used to be known as GIF animations) showing the change to our garden over a year's time. This pic was from late Summer (with a live "garden sculpture" posing for me):

And this morning:

No; they're no dummies. They're sleeping on a big cushion in the warm and dry house.

Here's one from July and one from December - can you even tell the difference?

That's not a season, hal. That's just a change in rainfall.

You say that like it's a negative thing - do you see me posting threads whining about too much snow in the driveway??? Why, no you don't :-)

It took the guy on the bike 5 months to go 200 feet down the road and another biker stopped, put up a yellow road sign, and caught up with him.

hal- so true. So true. But I have this little problem. I need to earn money to eat, and I've got this job, and they have a pension plan. So I'm living here until I can retire. Which will be about 3 years after I die. old fogey smiley

I occasionally regret turning down a job offer in San Diego back in the 1980's. But there is one really nice thing about winter.

It makes my lovely wife want to snuggle under the down comforter with me. :booty:

It is a season. In Sacramento our climate is Csa under the Köppen system, AKA Mediterranean. During the Summer, we are sitting under the sub tropical high so we don't get rain. During the Winter, this high pressure migrates southward and mid latitude cyclones dump lots of rain on us. The reason for this migration is that the solar declination moves Southward after the Summer equinox. This is absolutely a seasonal pattern.

Oh, one more thing: If I had a dollar for every time someone claimed that California is a desert, I'd be rich as could be. During our Winter season, we get around 16 inches of rain. The Sierras get the equivalent of 35 inches of rain stored as snow.

hal-first thing I noticed in your picture were the length of the shadows, then the green. I've been there when it has poured rain. I think southern CA is more desert. Doesn't LA average about 15" of precip per year?

Thanx. I hope the pears (the three on the left) have turned the corner and will recover. They were showing new growth and other signs of getting healthy at the end of the season.
